GAC has announced that it has begun production of its new 30,000-rpm EV motor for its Hyptec brand (formerly known as Aion Hyper). Known as the brand’s “Quark Electric Drive 2.0”, the new electric motor not only revs up to 30,000 rpm but can also increase the car’s range by 50 km due to its highly efficient operation.
According to GAC, the new Quark Electric Drive 2.0 motor has a power density of 13 kW/kg and a motor efficiency of 98.5%. The motor utilises a special amorphous soft magnet material (known as “liquid metal” due to its high permeability) which gives it an overall efficiency close to room temperature superconductivity. This improved efficiency results in an increased EV range of up to 50 km without having to increase battery size.

In a report by CarNewsChina, this improved efficiency is also capable of giving all-wheel drive (AWD) EVs the same range as their two-wheel drive (2WD) counterparts with the same battery size. The company claims that this new technology has the potential to save 90 billion kWh of electricity per year.
While improvement to battery technology for better EV efficiency has become quite common in the EV space, an improvement to the electric drive system for better efficiency is seldom heard of (or seldom claimed). GAC says that this new “Quark Electric Drive 2.0” motor will soon be installed in its Hyptec models.

In Malaysia, GAC’s only electric offering so far is the GAC Aion Y Plus, which isn’t part of the Hyptec range. The GAC Aion Y Plus is an EV SUV with a 5-seater configuration and a range of up to 490 km (NEDC). Its 63.3 kWh battery can be charged at a maximum AC charging rate of 6.6 kW and a maximum DC charging rate of 80kW. Sold in 2 variants in Malaysia, prices of the GAC Aion Y Plus start from RM119,800.
