ASEAN NCAP announced last Friday that the Chery Omoda 5 has scored a full five-star rating in its latest 2021-2025 test protocol – but that wasn’t all that Chery Malaysia was celebrating. In a press event today, the company revealed that the 88.64 points it achieved for the Omoda 5 is the highest-ever rating in the ASEAN NCAP tests thus far.
As disclosed in the ASEAN NCAP report last week, the score is broken down to 36.77/40.00 points for Adult Occupant Protection (AOP) category, 17.36/20.00 points for Child Occupant Protection (COP) category, 19.51/20.00 points for Safety Assist (SA), and 15.00/20.00 points for the Motorcyclist Safety (MS) category.
Speaking at the press event today, Chery Malaysia vice president Michael Chew said, “Achieving the ASEAN NCAP safety rating is a testament to our continuous commitment to safety, innovation, and most of all to our customers. This rating is not just a badge of honour; it is a promise to our customers that our OMODA 5 cars are built with your safety in mind as our highest priority.”
“[The] Omoda 5’s high scores across the four categories demonstrate our comprehensive approach to safety and our dedication to continuous improvement,” Chew added. The new ASEAN NCAP rating is the latest addition to the Chery Omoda 5’s collection of international safety ratings, including five stars in both EURO NCAP and ANCAP, both of which were achieved in 2022.
The compact crossover, launched in Malaysia last year, was recently embroiled in several high-profile controversies online, including one that has resulted in a recall exercise as a result of an improperly calibrated welding device during its production process.
According to a Chery Malaysia spokesperson, the recall exercise, including all inspections and parts replacement, has already been completed.
