Chery Malaysia explains cause of broken Omoda 5 rear axle – new website to identify affected units

Chery Malaysia has issued further clarification on the Omoda 5 rear axle issue. This follows after a statement on April 30 to recall 600 units of the Omoda 5 that could be similarly affected.

The company said that it is working closely with the Ministry of Transport (MOT) to ensure the rectification of all affected vehicles. Chery Auto Malaysia Vice President, Lee Wen Hsiang, said a voluntary meeting was arranged with the MOT to brief them on the current product inspection status and the root cause of the Omoda 5’s broken rear axle.

It’s said to be caused during a facility upgrade by a parts vendor during which a worn-out tip of the automated welding machine was replaced with a new one. The replacement of the welding tip resulted in a miscalibration of the equipment.

Chery Malaysia said that this directly affected 60 units of the Omoda 5, produced on the 15th of August 2023. However, as a precaution, it has decided to recall 600 units of the Omoda 5 instead, made from 14 to 17 August 2023 for inspection.

The company announced that it has set up a website for Omoda 5 owners to check and confirm if their vehicles are affected. This can be done simply by keying the vehicle’s Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). Click here to check if your Omoda 5 is affected.

As of 3 May 2024, Chery Malaysia has contacted 53% (32 out of 60) of the directly affected Omoda 5 owners. A weekly update will be publicly shared to provide updates on the recall exercise.
