Mitsubishi Mirage axed in America, production to end before 2025

The cheap and cheerful Mitsubishi Mirage will be discontinued in America by the end of 2024, according to a report by Car and Driver. The car was discontinued in Japan in 2022 and will soon bow out from the American market.

According to American automotive sites, this leaves the Nissan Versa as the only new cheap car offering for their market. The Mitsubishi Mirage is still available in markets like Thailand and the Philippines and no news of its discontinuation has surfaced recently.

Speaking to Car and Driver, Mitsubishi’s North American spokesman, Jeremey Barnes said, “Mirage is being discontinued in the U.S. market, and there will not be a 2025 model,” He adds that “Production will cease late this year, and we expect to have sufficient dealer stock to last into the summer of 2025.”

The Mitsubishi Mirage is no longer sold officially in Malaysia. It is however still sold in Thailand in both hatchback (Mirage) and saloon (Attrage) body styles. The Mirage is powered by a 1.2-litre naturally aspirated (NA) 3-cylinder engine that makes 78 hp @ 6,000 rpm and 100 Nm @ 4,000 rpm. The engine is paired with a continuously variable transmission (CVT) and sends power to the front wheels only.

The Mirage is essentially Mitsubishi’s car that competes with the likes of the Perodua Axia. Its name in the Mitsubishi model lineup has existed since 1978, and depending on its generation, it was the basis for the Proton Satria, Proton Putra, and even the Proton Saga. Its namesake disappeared in the early 2000s but made a return in 2012 as the sub-compact that we know today. With its exit from the American market, it is also expected to be discontinued in the Southeast Asian market too to make way for newer models.
