Mercedes-Benz Malaysia recently partnered with the Fire and Rescue Department of Malaysia (Bomba) to provide a comprehensive electric vehicle (EV) emergency training program. This initiative took place at Mercedes-Benz Malaysia’s state-of-the-art Training Academy in Puchong, Selangor.
The program comes as the adoption of EVs increases in Malaysia, highlighting the growing need for emergency responders to be well-equipped to handle EV-related incidents. Titled “Electrification Drive: Fire and Rescue Team Orientation,” the training aimed to equip Bomba personnel with essential knowledge about EV technology and industry best practices for managing EVs in emergencies.

Mercedes-Benz Cars Malaysia, CEO & President, Amanda Zhang recognizing the program’s vital role in ensuring preparedness, stated “we are happy to be working closely with the Fire and Rescue Department of Malaysia team over the years to establish and sustain a crucial support system, which creates a conducive ecosystem for EEV and drivers. This initiative underscores Mercedes-Benz Malaysia’s commitment to public safety by equipping rescue teams with the necessary knowledge and tools to manage EV emergencies. This not only enhances the safety of both responders and vehicle occupants but also minimizes response time and maximizes operational efficiency.”
The program included both theoretical and practical components designed to equip Bomba personnel with the skills necessary to safely manage EV incidents. Over 40 Bomba responders participated in the training, which covered a range of topics such as identification of different electric vehicle models, safe handling procedures for high-voltage vehicles and batteries, utilizing battery scanners effectively, proper application of fire blankets during EV emergencies, establishing emergency protocols for EV incidents, utilizing the functionalities of the Mercedes-Benz Rescue Assist App.

Pegawai Kanan Bomba I, Mohd Tilmizi bin Mustapa stated, “with the increase in electric mobility, there is a compelling need to understand and harness both the potentials and challenges of EV driving. It is crucial for emergency responders to be trained on the safety procedures for handling high-voltage vehicles and batteries, and to use battery scanners to evaluate battery conditions. Moreover, recognizing various EV models and their specific components, including cutting techniques for rescue operations, is essential. This specialized training reduces risks during incidents and enhances both the efficiency and safety of our teams, allowing them to manage
situations effectively while minimizing hazards to themselves and the public.”
The training also incorporated hands-on experience with a Mercedes-Benz Rescue Assist App. This app allows first responders to access crucial vehicle information quickly. Participants learned techniques for locating and scanning QR codes on the vehicle. Even if the QR codes are damaged or unavailable, responders can still access essential data through alternative methods within the app. This rapid access to information proves invaluable in time-critical emergencies.
