The much anticipated fifth-generation MINI Cooper SE (J01) has finally been launched in Malaysia with a price tag of RM200,188 on the road, without insurance, including the extended warranty and service package. It has just made its debut alongside the new Countryman and petrol-powered MINI Cooper at the MINI Family event in Petaling Jaya.
On the outside, the fifth-generation MINI Cooper features a significantly revised exterior compared to the previous model. However, it retains classic MINI design elements like short overhangs, a compact hood, and a long wheelbase with prominent wheels accompanied by flush door handles contributing to the low drag coefficient of 0.28. To note, the fifth-generation MINI Cooper SE chassis named LEMON is co-developed with a Chinese manufacturer GWM which shares the same platform as Ora Good Cat.

The front fascia of the new MINI Cooper receives a makeover. An octagonal grille with a Vibrant Silver surround replaces the previous design. The circular headlamps also see an update, losing their chrome trim. New daytime running lights incorporate a ring around each headlamp cluster and two horizontal bars on some models. The daytime running lights can be switched to create three adjustable light signatures, and all light modes have a welcome and goodbye animation.
The rear of the MINI Cooper adopts a new look with redesigned taillights, which, like the headlights, may offer different lighting modes (depending on configuration). For a cleaner aesthetic, the exterior features black trim details along the lower portions of the bumpers and sides.

The MINI Cooper SE boasts a single electric motor producing 218 hp and 330 Nm of torque, also driving the front wheels. This more powerful option achieves a 0-100 km/h time of 6.7 seconds. The MINI Cooper SE has a 54.2 kWh battery that gives 402 km of range (WLTP).

The interior of the MINI Cooper undergoes a significant redesign. A new, larger circular head unit dominates the center console. This 240-millimeter unit replaces the previous design, where a rectangular screen sat within a circular housing. The new head unit utilizes OLED technology and runs the latest MINI Operating System 9.
The MINI Cooper’s interior adopts a new, minimalist approach. This is reflected in the curved dashboard design and a reduction in the number of physical controls. The steering wheel undergoes a redesign, featuring a two-spoke layout. The “third spoke” is a fabric element rather than a structural component. Another notable change is the gear selector, which is now replaced by a toggle switch located beneath the central infotainment screen. A traditional gear selector is no longer present.
