2024 MINI Cooper S debuts in Malaysia, est. RM280k

Alongside the Countryman, the new 2024 MINI Cooper with the petrol engine has also been launched at Malaysia Autoshow 2024. The Prices for the revised 2025 MINI Cooper in its “Cooper S” version is estimated at RM280,000.

In case you’re wondering if it is electric, it is not. That is because the new MINI Cooper that is shown here is essentially a facelift which was built to stay updated with the design of the new MINI Cooper Electric (E and SE), despite carrying over the same petrol engine as before. Both petrol and electric versions of the MINI Cooper will coexist although the new electric model has yet to be launched in Malaysia.

Mimicking the style of the new MINI Cooper Electric (albeit built on the older chassis), the 2024 MINI Cooper can be distinguished from its different body panels. Its front bumper, for instance, starts below the headlight and the hood still encapsulates the entire circular headlights. The shape of the front camera (for the 360° view) is also different.

Together with the new look, the 2024 MINI Cooper also sports a new set of 18-inch wheels. Perhaps the most dramatic difference for this heavily facelifted version would be the new taillight design. Although sporting a “triangular” design, the taillights still accommodate the Union Jack-inspired cluster.

The engine is carried over from the earlier MINI Cooper which means you have the choice between a 3-cylinder 1.5L turbocharged engine and a 4-cylinder 2.0L turbocharged engine. The former is for the “standard” MINI Cooper while the latter is for the MINI Cooper S.

The 1.5L mill makes 156 hp (metric) and 230 Nm. Paired with a 7-speed DCT, the powertrain sends power to the front wheels only. This enables the car to go from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.7 seconds. This has yet to be previewed with the revised styling in Malaysia.

The 2.0L turbocharged engine in the Cooper S, on the other hand, outputs a higher 204 hp and 300 Nm. The larger engine is paired with a sportier 7-speed DCT and all power is also dent to the front wheels only. It provides a faster 0-100 km/h acceleration time of 6.6 seconds.

Inside, things have been significantly revamped with the new MINI Cooper getting a new circular head unit with the screen now bleeding out to the edges. The petrol MINI also gets the same new steering wheel as its electric counterpart.

And while it may try to emulate the style of the all-new MINI Electric, the 2024 MINI Cooper petrol does have its structural limitations. And as such, some parts differ – i.e. the centre console and the door cards.
