Lamborghini Urus SE PHEV debuts – 800hp, 4.0L V8 twin-turbo, 0-100km/h in 3.4 secs

Lamborghini has just unveiled the new plug-in hybrid (PHEV) Lamborghini Urus SE at the Beijing International Auto Show. The new PHEV Urus SE is the first plug-in hybrid Urus which also sports a significantly different exterior design.

At first glance, the new Lamborghini Urus SE PHEV looks a bit “softer” than the Urus that we have become accustomed to. According to Automobili Lamborghini, the Urus SE boasts a more aerodynamic appearance. Its headlights are sleeker and the hood and front bumper have been revised for better aerodynamic efficiency.

Round the back, the Urus SE has been revised with a larger “connecting piece” between the taillights a sleeker appearance. There also appears to be new line running down the centre of the rear of the Urus. According to Lamborghini, the Urus SE’s new diffuser and new spoiler provide 35% more downforce at high speeds compared to the Urus S, further enhancing its stability.

The showstopper of the PHEV Lamborghini Urus SE is the PHEV powertrain itself which consists of a 4.0L twin turbo engine and an electric drive system. This hybrid powertrain is able to produce a maximum system output of 800 hp (metric). No system torque figures are shared but Lamborghini has reported the separate power and torque figures of the engine and the electric drive system.

With pure petrol power, the 4.0L V8 twin-turbo engine is able to output 620 hp (metric) and 800 Nm. With pure electric power, the transmission-integrated electric drive system is able to output 192 hp (metric) and 483 Nm. With the system working harmoniously, the Lamborghini Urus Se accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.4 seconds.

Being “transmission-integrated” means that the electric motor is housed within the 8-speed automatic transmission itself. The benefit of that is that it means the Urus SE can also drive all of its four wheels on electric power alone. Sourcing electricity from a 25.9 kWh lithium-ion battery, the Lamborghini Urus SE can be driven on pure electricity for 60 km.

The Lamborghini Urus Se also boasts a new centrally-located longitudinal electric torque vectoring system with an electro-hydraulic multi-plate clutch, which distributes driving torque variably and continuously between the front and rear axles.

With this, the transfer case works in synergy with the new electronic limited-slip differential installed on the rear axle, giving the vehicle “on demand” oversteering to convey the feel of a purebred super sports car.

Inside the PHEV Lamborghini Urus SE, you will find an updated cabin that highlights Lamborghini’s “feel like a pilot” design DNA. It features new solutions throughout the front section of the dashboard and it accentuates the lightweight feeling already introduced on the Revuelto.

Like most new cars of today, the Urus SE gets a bigger screen, now measuring 12.3 inches diagonally. It features a new version of the Human Machine Interface (HMI) that Lambo says is more intuitive to use.

The Lamborghini Centro Stile designers also directed their design focus on the air vents; the anodized aluminium trim elements with the unmistakable Y shape; and the new panel, seat, and dashboard coverings.

Lamborghini Chairman & CEO, Stephen Winkelmann said, “With the Urus we changed the paradigms of the SUV world, ushering in a new segment. In just a few years, the Urus has become our brand’s bestseller, enabling Lamborghini to attract new customers and strengthen its position in the most important markets. With the Urus SE, we’ve taken another step towards the future in line with our Direzione Cor Tauri strategy, moving ahead with the electrification of the range and the path toward decarbonization that began with the introduction of the Revuelto super sports car in March 2023.”

Lamborghini Chief Technical Officer, Dr. Ing. Rouven Mohr said, “The underlying mission of the project was clear: to offer state-of-the-art performance combined with the uncompromising character typical of Lamborghini’s DNA”, he adds that “The Urus SE is positioned at the top of its class in terms of being fun to drive and for its driving dynamics. It’s a vehicle that harmoniously combines different qualities: absolute comfort and at the same time performance and fun-to-drive, ensuring an experience like no other.”
