It looks like Subaru is gearing its STI performance sub-division for the future, if the new Performance-E STI concept on show at the ongoing Japan Mobility Show 2025 is any indication. It might not have an engine, but its exciting looks are certainly a good sign… one that signals that even in the distant future of EVs, enthusiasts can still enjoy STI cars.
Details are scarce for now. Subaru did not divulge much about the new Performance-E STI concept beyond stating that it is a fully electric concept which represents the future of Subaru’s “Performance Scene,” and that the Performance-E STI “combines thrilling aesthetic proportions with outstanding aerodynamics and practicality, and a design that evokes the brand’s heritage while providing a driver-friendly layout.”
Clearly, it’s meant to be a design study for now. But at least visually, the Performance-E STI is certainly thrilling to look at. It shares the fastback profile of the FL5 Civic Type R, but reimagined with very aggressive lines, akin to a rally car, keeping in Subaru’s STI style.
This is completed by the taillights, which flank an illuminated the “SUBARU” wordmark to create a full-width effect. Coupled with the large rear diffuser housing a rain light, the Performance-E STI – even in concept form – looks like it’s ready to hit the track.

The showcar doubles down on its aggressive, race-car styling cues by featuring three distinct spoilers: the obvious one being a large ducktail on the boot lid, joined by two large winglets flanking the C-pillars. Continuing the trend of aerodynamics are the centre lock alloy wheels featuring aero covers painted in gold, which could be a throwback to the Subaru Impreza WRCs fielded by the company during rally events.
As for the interior, it remains a Pandora’s box, though we wouldn’t be surprised to find some ultra-minimalist dashboard, joined by perhaps a yoke-style steering wheel for the true motorsports ambience.
Likewise, the powertrain remains just as big of a question mark. It’s up to anyone’s guess what the Performance-E STI powertrain could be: a dual-motor, tri-motor, or even a bonkers quad-motor setup that perfectly mirrors the all-wheel drive setup found in the Subaru WRX and Impreza STI?
The Performance-E STI serves as a trailer for the future of the STI brand, especially when viewed against Subaru’s current trio of EV models: Solterra, Uncharted, and the Trailseeker. Given that those three are exclusively focused on the crossover and SUV segments, a whisper-quiet production STI could be the perfect halo car for a brand so steeped in motorsports legacy.
