BYD to produce EVs in Indonesia by 2026 – approx. RM6.2b invested in production plant

BYD is set to start producing its electric vehicles (EVs) in Indonesia by 2026, according to a recent social media post by Indonesia’s Coordinating Minister of Maritime and Investment Affairs, Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan. In line with that target, the groundbreaking ceremony of BYD’s production plant in Indonesia is set for July 2024.

In the social media post, Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan wrote, “Before returning home [from China], my Deputy visited Shenzhen to meet BYD to finalize their factory investment. BYD is very enthusiastic about investing in Indonesia and the target is that in early 2026, their factory can start commercial production in Indonesia.”

Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan also stressed in his social media post via video that he encourages the government to build more EV chargers. This is to encourage the EV uptake in the country.

In a separate news, it was reported that Indonesia’s Coordinating Minister of Economic Affairs, Airlangga Hartarto revealed that BYD has invested USD 1.3 billion (approx. RM 6.16 billion) in its Indonesian production plant. He said the investment value was obtained via the company’s executives. The production capacity of the upcoming BYD Indonesian plant is expected to hit 150,000 units per year with the three BYD models – the Atto 3, Dolphin, and Seal.

BYD’s offerings in Indonesia are almost identical to Malaysia with the three models being sold in the country. However, the Indonesian market only receives one variant of the BYD Atto 3 and one variant of the BYD Dolphin. Both cars are only offered in their Extended Range variants. The BYD Seal is offered in 2 variants in Indonesia, just like its Malaysian counterpart.

The BYD brand was launched in Indonesia in January 2024, about over a year after its entry into the Malaysian market. While there have been no developments on local assembly of BYD EVs in Malaysia yet, Indonesia has secured an assembly plant.
