Proton saw 87% growth in 2023 in Brunei – to be first export market for S70

Proton has just announced it managed to sell 789 cars in Brunei in 2023, showing an 87% growth from the previous 422 units sold in 2022. With that, Proton secured a 5.4% market share with a Total-Industry-Volume (TIV) of 14,640 units.

The best-selling model from Proton in Brunei last year was the Proton X50 with a total of 476 units sold. It contributed to 60% of Proton’s sales last year and was the third best-selling B-segment SUV in Brunei. As for other models, the Persona and Iriz ranked sixth and eighth in their respective segments. The Proton X90, on the other hand, ranked seventh in its segment in Brunei.

Proton’s Director of International Sales Division, Steven Xu said, “The popularity of the Proton X50 in Brunei can be attributed to clear communications about its value and features, as well as our brand equity. Proton worked closely with our importers, PAD Motors, to promote the competitive price and superior features the model had over its rivals while also offering finance packages to make ownership easier. This was then bolstered by our on-ground activities to promote the Proton brand, which were assisted by the success of the X50 in Malaysia that helped build the confidence of Brunei customers.”

Using the success from 2023 as a platform, both Proton and PAD Motors are confident of achieving more than 1,000 units for Brunei in 2024. Proton plans to achieve this with the all-new Proton S70, which is due to make its Bruneian debut by the end of February. Brunei will be the first international market to receive the S70 and 15 units were shipped there last month ahead of its official launch.

Steven Xu said, “For 2024, Proton is confident of achieving more growth in Brunei. With continued strong interest in the Proton X50 and other models as well as the introduction of the Proton S70, we target to break through the 1,000 units barrier at the end of the year.”
