10,000 EV chargers in Malaysia by 2025? MITI to revise “aggressive” target

Remember the 10,000 EV chargers in Malaysia target set by the government not so long ago? The Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI) has announced that it will revise this target, considering the challenges currently faced and the status quo of the EV charger dissipation in the country.

MITI Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz said, “It seems that the target is quite aggressive because there are many issues that we need to address and it involves many processes and agencies such as the approval process and agencies such as the Energy Commission, local authorities, and other parties.”

As of October 2023, data from the Malaysian Automotive Association show a total of 1,434 EV chargers that have been made operational in Malaysia. That number is still very far from the 10,000-charger target as we approach 2025. The Malaysian EV task force has also previously revealed preliminary locations for the 10,000 EV chargers in Malaysia.

As shared by the EV task force last year, there are plans for 900 EV chargers in Kuala Lumpur, 100 chargers in Putrajaya, 50 chargers in Labuan, and 250 chargers in Kelantan. The full list of the future charger distribution can be accessed here.

Recent mishaps at EV charging stations have prompted stricter action by the Energy Commission of Malaysia and it has been reported that some EV chargers in Malaysia have been closed temporarily. Charging point operators have also addressed complaints about the long approval processes for EV chargers.

Tengku Zafrul says “Among the complaints received is about the approval period for setting up a charging station taking a long time. What we need to focus more is how to make it more seamless and faster to get the approval.”
