MAA: 10,159 EVs were sold in Malaysia in 2023, almost quadruple from 2022

In a press conference today, the Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA) revealed the total sales volume for 2023, along with its breakdown which includes the sales of fully electric vehicles (EVs) in Malaysia. In 2023, a total of 10,159 EVs (passenger and commercial) were sold, 386% of what it was in 2022 which saw 2,631 units sold.

Together with the number EV sales, MAA also shared the number of hybrid vehicles sold in 2023 which saw 28,055 units sold (up from 2022’s 19,988 units). Both fully electric and hybrid cars combine to give a total number of 38,055 electrified vehicles sold in Malaysia in 2023.

The number of EVs sold in Malaysia has increased significantly over the years. In 2021, only 278 units were sold. This number later tenfold in 2022 with 2,631 units and in 2023 it has almost quadrupled with 10,159 units. Over 3 years, 13,068 electric vehicles have been sold, at least the ones recorded by MAA.

The total industry volume for 2023 was 799,731 units which means the total sales of EVs contributed 1.27% of vehicle sales. Electrified vehicles (EV and hybrid) contribute to 4.76% of that figure and the government has previously announced that it is aiming for 20% by 2030.

Together with the increasing number of EV sales, the number of public chargers has also increased. Last reported at 1,246 units, the number has now risen to 1,434 units. The target for Malaysia is to achieve 10,000 public EV chargers by 2025.

The increased number of EVs in Malaysia is thanks to the introduction of more affordable electric cars to the Malaysian market. Some affordable EVs to name include the likes of the BYD Atto 3, BYD, Dolphin, Tesla Model 3, Smart #1, and the Ora Good Cat. More affordable EVs are expected to be launched in Malaysia in 2024.
