BMW i5 Touring teased – fully electric wagon to debut soon

After the all-new 5 Series and the i5, BMW is now teasing the upcoming i5 Touring which is set to make its world debut this year. Through a social media post, BMW is teasing the wagon silhouette of the 5 Series’ latest addition. This isn’t the first time the 5 Series wagon is teased, but this time around, it’s the all-electric version.

The current generation of the 5 Series is called the G60 for its petrol version and the G60E for the all-electric version (the i5). Judging by the usual naming convention of the 5 Series, the petrol wagon should be called the G61, while the i5 Touring should be called the G61E. Interestingly, the latest generation of the 5 Series wagon might be first unveiled as an all-electric car.

The sedan version of the 5 Series and i5 have already made their world debut last year and the i5 has already been launched in Malaysia. Although there are some wagon fans in Malaysia, we don’t expect the i5 Touring to be launched in Malaysia officially. The i5 in Malaysia is currently offered in one variant only which is the i5 eDrive40.

The BMW i5 eDrive40 is a single-motor rear-wheel-drive electric car with an electric range of 582 km. The single motor outputs 340 hp and 430 Nm (in boost mode) and allows the i5 to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.0 seconds. Its top speed is limited to 193 km/h. We can expect this exact powertrain to be in one of the variants of the i5 Touring as well, albeit with a shorter all-electric range due to its additional mass. There is a more powerful version of the i5 sedan which is the i5 M60 xDrive.

Another version of the 5 Series we anticipate besides the i5 Touring, is the flagship M5. The M5 will be available in both sedan and wagon guises and it will be a plug-in hybrid performance car.
