The next-gen BMW M5 will get a Touring variant, and we love it already

The all-new BMW 5 Series has only just made its global debut last month, but BMW’s M division has already been busy at work in developing the all-new M5. And for the first time in over a decade, the all-new 2024 BMW M5 will be offered in a Touring form. Hoo, boy.

If you’ve been reading AutoBuzz.my for a while now, you would’ve already known that we are huge fans of wagons/estates, so we’ll spare you from the brainwashing sales pitch. But what you need to know is that the upcoming M5 Touring is only be the third of such in its history (after the E34 and E61), and will feature a hybrid powertrain underneath its bonnet.

Based on internet intel, the powertrain will likely consist of a 4.4 turbocharged V8 engine and an electric motor, making around 718 hp and 800 Nm according to one source. It’s the same powertrain set-up as the BMW XM, and as demonstrated by the XM Label Red, the V8 hybrid can still make even more power, which will be useful for when BMW decides to introduce the M5 CS.

Just like the outgoing model, the all-new 2024 BMW M5 will also likely come exclusively with the xDrive M all-wheel drive system – which is to say it should also still have a rear-wheels-only mode for when you want to hoon around.

Almost every square inch of the prototype’s exterior surface here is plastered in camouflage, but from what we can see, it appears that the tail light design on the M5 Touring will be quite a bit different when compared to the regular 5 Series sedan. Otherwise, your usual signature M cues are all still here, including the flared out fenders, quad exhaust tips, as well as the massive brakes and an equally-sized wheel to fit them.

Interestingly, this is also the first time we’re seeing the all-new BMW 5 Series in a Touring body style – so expect to find something similar once the BMW G61 5 Series Touring variant comes out, but obviously without the M bits.

The fully-electric BMW i5 is also available in an M60 variant that offers up to 590 hp.

BMW says that the all-new BMW M5 Sedan has already begun road testing, while the M5 Touring will kickstart its prototype tests “in the next few days”, taking the all-new super-wagon through urban traffic, country roads, highways, and perhaps most importantly, the Nurburgring Nordschleife.

We can’t wait already.
