Mazda 6 discontinued in Japan, to end production in April 2024

Mazda has announced that it will discontinue the Mazda 6 in Japan and that its production for the domestic market will end by mid-April 2024. The Mazda 6 will still be available in other regions.

The end of the Mazda 6 in Japan comes after more than 20 years of it in its domestic market. The Mazda 6/Atenza was first introduced in 2002 and it symbolizes Mazda’s “Zoom-Zoom” philosophy and fully embodies the brand’s DNA. The Mazda 6 has since then undergone 2 model changes.

Mazda Executive Office in charge of domestic sales, Kazuyoshi Todo said, “Successive Atenzas and Mazda 6s have been loved by many customers for a long time, with a cumulative total of 226,437 units sold in Japan. The CX series of wagons will take over this role, and we will continue to deliver a lively experience to our customers through driving pleasure that is in tune with the times.”

This discontinuation of the Mazda 6 in Japan does not affect the Mazda 6 in Malaysia. Currently available for the Malaysian market are 3 variants of the Mazda 6 – the 2.0L sedan, the 2.5L High Plus sedan, and the 2.5 L Touring. Prices of the Mazda 6 in Malaysia range from RM180,000 to RM240,000.

The Mazda 6 was recently updated in Malaysia in October 2023, which also saw the unveiling of its special “20th Anniversary Edition”. The Mazda 6 is one of the D-segment saloon options in Malaysia, going against the likes of the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry.

Mazda says that orders for the discontinued Mazda 6 for Japan will end when the number of units produced in April 2024 is reached.
