SIRIM to initiate certification programme for EV charging stations in Malaysia

SIRIM QAS International, a subsidiary of the Standards and Industrial Research Institute of Malaysia (SIRIM) will be instigating a certification programme that is said to be vital in ensuring that all electric vehicle (EV) charging stations in Malaysia are accredited and safe for all EV users.

In a statement released by the certification body, SIRIM QAS International is said to have the expertise and facilities needed to ensure EV charging stations in Malaysia are safe, reliable, and functional.

According to a report by Bernama, the certification process will consist of comprehensive testing protocols, as well as a diligent examination of all aspects to ensure that the operators of the charging stations adhere to strict safety requirements and performance standards.

SIRIM said that the increase in EV charging stations across the country has raised concerns about their safety and legitimacy. With the Malaysian government aiming to have 10,000 public charging stations by 2025, and together with the evergrowing number of EVs on Malaysian roads, SIRIM sees the need to ensure that the charging stations are safe to use.

When asked who will need to get certified, SIRIM said that the certification extends beyond just charging manufacturers. This includes installers, building contractors, automotive service providers, and EV charging station maintenance professionals.

QAS head of product certification, Muhammad Kamal Sabran said, “With our certification scheme, the EV industry in Malaysia will be able to advance and develop soon.”

“This collective effort ensures a commitment to providing a safe and reliable charging experience for EV owners, fostering a culture of excellence and instilling confidence in manufacturers, regulators, and customers alike. By prioritising safety, reliability, and functionality, Malaysia is leading the way toward an environmentally sustainable nation, encouraging electric mobility with confidence and integrity,” added SIRIM.
