BYD Seal previewed in Malaysia, Tesla Model 3 rival launching early 2024

Another electric car is here in Malaysia, and it is the BYD Seal. Not officially launched yet, the electric car from BYD is being previewed at BYD’s 1st-year celebration happening this weekend at the Bukit Kiara Equestrian & Country Resort.

Already launched in Thailand and Singapore, the BYD Seal comes in several variants which include the “base” Dynamic RWD, the Premium, and the AWD Performance. BYD Cars Malaysia has yet to confirm which variant(s) will be offered upon its launch in Malaysia.

The BYD Seal is an electric sedan that is about the size of the BMW i4 or Tesla Model 3. Being a sedan, it has a separate boot compartment unlike the Gran Coupe BMW i4. Provided it comes with the correct pricing, the BYD Seal could be a worthy competitor to the Tesla Model 3 in Malaysia.

The performance and EV numbers of the BYD Seal vary with its variants. Starting from the lower end, the Dynamic RWD sports a single electric motor on the rear axle which can produce 150 kW (203 hp) and 310 Nm. This results in a century sprint time of 7.5 seconds. The Dynamic RWD houses a 61.4 kWh LFP blade battery which gives it a range of up to 460 km (WLTP).

Up a tier is the BYD Seal Premium, which gets a larger 82.5 kWh LFP battery for a range of 570 km (650 km NEDC). The battery also raises the motor’s output on the rear axle up to 230 kW (313 hp) and 360 Nm, translating to a 0-100 km/h sprint in 5.9 seconds.

Finally, at the top of the range is the AWD Performance variant which gets a dual-motor all-wheel drive (AWD) setup. This system outputs 530 hp and 670 Nm. 0-100 km/h is done in just 3.8 seconds, and the AWD Performance will travel up to 520 km (580 km NEDC) thanks to the same 82.5 kWh battery pack found in the Premium variant.

To charge, the Dynamic RWD can handle a maximum rate of 110 kW with DC Charging while the Premium and Performance can handle 150 kW DC charging. AC charging is capped at 7 kW maximum for all variants. Also standard on the BYD Seal is the vehicle-to-load (V2L) function.

Inside, the BYD Seal sports a similar theme with the Atto 3 and Dolphin with a big screen in the middle and a smaller one for the digital instrument cluster. The cabin also has an oceanic theme going on.

Now previewed to the public, we can expect the BYD Seal to officially launch in Malaysia soon.
