Audi TT production ends after 25 years and 662,762 units

After 25 years and with 662,762 units produced, production of the Audi TT has come to an end as announced by Audi through its social media pages. The writings were already on the wall from earlier this month with Audi announcing the TT Roadster Final Edition for the US market.

The TT is among the few iconic vehicles from the Ingolstadt carmaker, and it made its first debut back in the late 90s. Its first generation shared the same platform with the then Volkswagen Golf and the Audi A3. Throughout its 25 years, there have been 3 generations of the Audi TT.

The Audi TT has always been a unique proposition looking for a fun car to drive as it was relatively affordable given its size and its platform. Given its body type, it is quite impressive that the Audi TT has managed to stay in the market for a quarter of a century. For some of us car enthusiasts, our first introduction to the Audi TT may have been in video games.

Depending on its variant, the Audi TT featured either a front-engine front-wheel drive (FWD) layout or an all-wheel drive (AWD) quattro layout. Powertrain options for the Audi TT have been generally sub-2-litre inline-4 engines with turbochargers. There have also been “special” engines such as the staggered 6 “VR6” engine and inline-5 engines.

The final Audi TT rolled off Audi’s Hungary plant just yesterday after a long run of 25 years. That final unit will be placed in Audi’s historic vehicle collection. With the end of the Audi TT, we’re not quite sure if it will have a direct or indirect successor in the future. We just hope its name doesn’t get transferred onto an electric SUV.

To commemorate the end of the Audi TT, Audi has also announced the Audi TT RS Iconic Edition which is limited to 100 units worldwide. Out of the 100 units, 55 have been reserved for the German market.
