Video: Maserati MC20 Cielo, from RM1.2 million before taxes

The open-top version of the Maserati MC20 has now been launched in Malaysia, and if you didn’t know it yet, it is called the Maserati MC20 Cielo. And if you’re wondering how much it costs, the MC20 Cielo fetches a starting price of RM1,228,000 before taxes and options.

One could simply call it a roofless MC20, but Maserati boats that the retractable glass roof in the MC20 Cielo is the epitome of technology. It opens in 12 seconds and closes in the same amount of time as well. We try it for ourselves in this video to see if that claimed timing is accurate. Oh and by the way, “Cielo” is the Italian word for sky, since this car has an open top.

Maserati, will, in the future, create the MC20 Folgore which is an all-electric version of the MC20, but that time hasn’t come just yet. The MC20 Cielo is a pure internal combustion engine supercar with a 3.0-litre V6 twin-turbo twin-spark engine. This engine churns out a maximum power output of 630 hp at 7,500 rpm and a maximum torque of 730 Nm from 3,000 to 5,500 rpm.

Paired with the engine is an 8-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT) and all power is sent to the rear wheels. Weighing in at 1,540 kg (65 kg more than the coupe), the Cielo does 0-100 km/h in 3.0 seconds and 0-200 km/h in 9.2 seconds. Its top speed is reported to be over 320 km/h.

Besides the retractable glass roof, another highlight of the Maserati MC20 Cielo is its butterfly doors. It is, according to Maserati, the only part of the car which is meant to be flashy as it shows off the carbon fibre chassis of the car.

As for the cockpit, the MC20 Cielo adopts a Spartan approach. The centre console is slim and houses the essential items only. The steering wheel has been designed with a thicker girth for better ergonomics and the seats are on the plush side.

The MC20 also features a wide range of Active Safety Systems. As well as the parking sensors, rear-view camera, and blind spot monitoring included in the MC20 since the MY22, the new spyder introduces autonomous emergency brake, traffic sign information, and a new 360° camera. Watch the video for a complete walkaround of the MC20 Cielo.
