Updated Volvo XC40 Recharge Pure Electric now in Thailand – 62km more range, Malaysia next?

If you didn’t know, both the Volvo XC40 Recharge Pure Electric and the Volvo C40 Recharge have been updated with a bigger battery and more range back in January this year. And following the updated C40’s debut up north, the updated Volvo XC40 Recharge Pure Electric has also been launched in Thailand.

Just like the updated Volvo C40, the updated Volvo XC40 recharge Pure Electric also gets a bigger battery pack and its single motor variant is now rear-wheel drive (RWD) instead of front-wheel drive (FWD). A new “Cloud Blue” exterior colour now replaces the previously-available “Fjord Blue”. The full list of updates to the Volvo XC40 Recharge Pure Electric in Thailand are as such:

  • New “Cloud Blue” exterior colour replaces “Fjord Blue”
  • New design 19-inch alloy wheels
  • Increased battery capacity to 82 kWh (previously 78 kWh)
  • Increased WLTP range at 500 km (previously 438 km)
  • DC charging rate now at 200 kW maximum (previously 150 kW)
  • DC charging from 10 – 80% now 28 minutes (previously 34 minutes).
  • Rear-biased dual-motor AWD setup

While Thailand gets both the single-motor and dual-motor versions of the Volvo XC40 recharge Pure Electric, Malaysia only gets the dual-motor version. The new dual-motor version that Thailand has welcomed sports a larger 82-kWh battery pack as opposed to the 78-kWh pack in the outgoing version. The bigger battery pack provides 500 km of range (WLTP), which is 62 km more than the outgoing version’s 438 km range.

Charging is also faster now, thanks to the fact that the XC40 Recharge Pure Electric can now handle a DC charging rate of up to 200 kW. Previously it could only handle a maximum rate of 150 kW. This means that it now takes 28 minutes to from 10% to 80% state of charge (SoC) while previously it took 34 minutes.

Power output remains the same at 408 hp (metric), albeit with a rear-biased distribution now. The outgoing dual-motor XC40 has a 50:50 distribution.

The exterior design of the XC40 Recharge Pure Electric remains largely unchanged as it retains the same bumper designs. Perhaps the most drastic difference is the cancellation of the “Fjord Blue” colour in favour of a new “Cloud Blue” exterior colour. The XC40 also gets a new set of 19-inch wheels.

In Malaysia, the Volvo XC40 is currently offered in its outgoing version and only in its dual-motor variant. The XC40 Recharge Pure Electric was first introduced in Malaysia in early 2022 and received a facelift later in November 2022. No official information has been released regarding the upcoming model update for both the XC40 and C40 for Malaysia.
