2023 BYD Dolphin EV to launch in Malaysia on July 28, ROI now open

BYD Cars Malaysia has announced on its social media page that the 2023 BYD Dolphin all-electric (EV) hatchback will finally be making its launch in Malaysia on July 28, 2023. The carmaker has also created a registration of interest page on its official site, so all of you who are interested may register your interest over there.

When launched in Malaysia, the 2023 BYD Dolphin will be BYD’s second model in our market and will be slotted under the larger Atto 3 EV SUV. It will also be the first of its kind, as B-segment hatchbacks in our market thus far have all been powered by either internal combustion engines (ICEs) or petrol hybrid powertrains.

If you are wondering how big (or small) the Dolphin EV hatchback is, it measures 4,290 mm long, 1,570 mm tall, and 1,770 mm wide, and is underpinned by a 2,700 mm long wheelbase. This makes it just a hair larger than ICE B-segment hatchbacks in the Malaysian market such as the Perodua Myvi, Proton Iriz, and Toyota Yaris, and is about the same size as the Honda City Hatchback.

Powering the Dolphin EV hatchback is a single-motor setup that pushes out 94 hp and 180 Nm. Paired with BYD’s Cell to Body (CTB) battery with a 44.9 kWh capacity, enabling the EV hatchback to travel up to 490 km (NEDC).

Charging the BYD Dolphin from 20% to 80% takes 33 minutes using a 60 kW DC charger. As for AC charging, it can support up to 7 kW, which will take around 7.5 hours to juice up from flat to full.

We don’t know what is the BYD Dolphin’s Malaysian retail price just yet, but we are presuming it to be around the RM100,00 and RM120,000 ballpark. This presumption is based on the BYD Atto 3’s local retail prices of RM149,800 and RM167,800, and also the fact that the Dolphin will be positioned under it when launched.

How much do you think the BYD Dolphin will be priced at? Are you anticipating its Malaysian launch? Let us know in the comments section!
