Having just completed its ‘Phase One’ plans yesterday with the launch of the Tiggo 8 Pro and Omoda 5 here in Malaysia, Chery is now going full steam ahead as it prepares its next launches, including the Tiggo 7 Pro as their “next model”, as confirmed by Chery International Vice President Shawn Xu during the press conference yesterday.

The Tiggo 7 Pro has already been previewed here in Malaysia last year, featuring a 1.5-litre turbocharged inline-four engine underneath the bonnet. Sharing the same powertrain as the Omoda 5, the 1.5-litre mill in the Chery Tiggo 7 Pro makes 156 hp and 230 Nm, with drive sent to the front wheels via a CVT gearbox.

Like the Omoda 5, the Chery Tiggo 7 Pro is also available with a 194 hp/290 Nm 1.6-litre turbocharged engine, though it’s unclear if the more powerful variant will be making its way into Malaysia.

Coming in at around the size of the Proton X70, the Chery Tiggo 7 Pro is well-equipped with a myriad of creature comfort niceties, including wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, leather upholstery, and a full suite of advanced driver assistance features.

Final equipment list, however, will have to wait until closer to its official launch here in Malaysia. Similar to the Omoda 5 and Tiggo 8 Pro, the Chery Tiggo 7 Pro should also be locally assembled at the Inokom plant in Kulim, Kedah.

Aside from the Tiggo 7 Pro, Chery has also confirmed that the fully-electric Omoda 5 EV will also be making its way into Malaysia next year. First unveiled in China earlier this year, the fully-electric B-segment SUV will be powered by a single motor setup that pushes out 221 hp, paired to a 61 kWh battery for a driving range of 450 km (WLTP) on a single charge.

The Omoda 5 EV, alongside the Tiggo 8 Pro PHEV, will be part of Chery Malaysia’s push towards achieving a 20% market share in the EV and PHEV segments in 2024. The latter will be making its official debut in Malaysia later this year.
