All-new Lexus GX debuts – V6 twin turbo engine, 354hp, 650Nm

Lexus has just unveiled the all-new Lexus GX to the world at a premiere in Texas. The all-new GX is set to be gradually released in different regions starting at the end of 2023.

Not available in Malaysia, the Lexus GX is positioned between the Lexus LX and RX and primarily targets the North American market. It sits on a body-on-frame structure and has always been a capable luxury off-roader. According to Lexus, over 540,000 units have been sold globally as of March 2023.

Lexus says that the all-new GX has been reimagined as “The Premium Off-Roader” and has been designed to elevate the customer experience in diverse scenarios. According to Lexus GX Chief Engineer, Koji Tsukasaki, the all-new GX is essentially like a diver’s watch in the sense that “even if its full functionality isn’t always needed, it is great to know it is always capable.”

And the all-new GX’s design certainly embodies that highly capable image. With its pulled-back front pillars, flared wings, and low belt line, the all-new GX’s design has authentic off-roader proportions. According to Lexus, the overall effect that they wanted to achieve was “the look of a car that has been cut from a solid block of metal.”

In Lexus’ own words, “The thick, squared-off shape of the bonnet projects toughness, but the bonnet’s low-set centre section ensures the driver has a good view of front corners, so they can manoeuvre the vehicle with confidence. With a shorter front overhang, the GX has a greater approach angle for tackling steeper slopes.”

Although a bit lower in terms of overall height in comparison to its predecessor, the all-new GX is now wider, longer, and also comes with a longer wheelbase.

Under the hood of the all-new GX is a 3.5-litre turbocharged V6 engine that makes 354 hp (metric) and 650 Nm. The outgoing GX with the V8 engine makes 296 hp (metric) and 438 Nm. Paired with the new V6 engine is a 10-speed Direct Shift automatic transmission, replacing the outgoing model’s 6-speed automatic box. Lexus says that customers will appreciate the V6 engine’s quieter characteristics.

While it may be tough, slightly classic, and adventurous on the outside, the interior of the all-new Lexus GX is said to be modern and calming. Lexus says that the human-centred design approach has created a space where people can feel relaxed and secure, whatever the journey may be.

The Lexus GX is the latest Lexus model to adopt the Tazuna concept in which all the principal controls and information sources are positioned for use with just a small movement of the hand or eye. The horizontal instrument panel and lower belt line ensure a good all-round view so the driver has a good sense of the vehicle’s attitude and position on the road at all times. A prominent 14-inch touchscreen display gives clear and easy access to multimedia functions.

With the debut of the all-new GX, Lexus also introduces the halo version of the car which is the Lexus GX Overtrail. The GX Overtrail is equipped with exclusive 18-inch wheels, a 20 mm wider tread, black wheel arch mouldings, side under protection, and aluminium underguards. The GX Overtrail can also be specified with optional raised bumper corners.
