Approaching its 40th-anniversary celebration this year, Proton will soon launch the Proton X90, its first new energy vehicle, and its third SUV. Full details of the Proton X90 will be revealed upon launch, but for now, Proton has already unveiled its new SUV and announced that there will be four variants to choose from – Standard, Executive, Premium, and Flagship.
Based on the Geely Haoyue, most of us already have a grasp of what Proton’s new SUV would look like. Being a Proton model, the large SUV sports the brand’s signature Infinite weave grille, albeit an evolved one. Perched on the grille is the latest iteration of the Proton emblem.

The Proton X90 will be available in both 6-seater and 7-seater configurations. The former will be equipped with captain seats, adding a dash of luxury to Proton’s upcoming new SUV.
Powering the Proton X90 will be a 48V mild hybrid system that consists of a 1.5-litre TGDI engine and an electric drive component. The system is said to be 15% more fuel efficient than its pure-petrol version. Combined, the system makes 190 hp (metric) and 300 Nm. The 48V system provides an additional boost of 13 hp (metric) and 45 Nm. Paired with a 7-speed DCT, Proton says that the powertrain has received accolades in China and the Philippines.

The Proton X90 also introduces new safety features to the brand such as Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA), Rear Collision Warning (RCW), and Traffic Sign Information (TSI). These features will most likely find their way into other Proton models eventually.
Speaking at the media preview, Proton Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Li Chunrong said, “Proton is proud to continue playing a leading role in the development of the local automotive industry. With our commitment to “Intelligence That Empowers,” we are introducing the Proton X90 as our first mid-hybrid model, showcasing innovative technologies and intelligent solutions that empower our customers. The 48V EMS System delivers improved fuel efficiency, performance, and reduced emissions, and represents our first step into the New Energy Vehicle segment.”

Customers eager to get a first-hand look at the new Proton X90 SUV will have their chance during a series of preview sessions across six cities starting 8 April 2023. The sessions will provide the public with an opportunity to view the vehicle and its features and for those eager to book a unit of the newest Proton model, order books will soon be open so keep a lookout for the announcement. Proton has also yet to announce the Proton X90’s launch date.
