Video: Mazda CX-9 Ignite Edition review – the RM345k flagship SUV

Launched in September 2021, the Mazda CX-9 Ignite Edition is one of the few SUVs in Malaysia that are offered with a seven-seater configuration. Slightly refreshed from the launch version in 2017, the Mazda CX-9 Ignite Edition comes in both 2WD and AWD guise, fetching a price of RM 328,610 and RM 345,610 respectively.

Powering the Mazda CX-9 Ignite Edition is a 2.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine that produces 228 hp and 350 Nm. Power is transmitted via a six-speed automatic transmission and the “Ignite Edition” adds paddle shifters.

Looks-wise, the Mazda CX-9 Ignite Edition is given a “chrome delete” for most of its trim thanks to the “Ignite” treatment. Even the 20-inch alloy wheels are blacked out, providing a stealthier and sleeker look for the seven-seater SUV. Featured on the CX-9 are automatic LED headlamps, a sunroof, keyless entry, and a powered tailgate.

The blacked-out treatment is also given to the cabin, and the result may create dividing opinions. While some may find it sleek, our very own Eu Jin thinks it looks a little bit “base spec”. Watch the video to hear him say it. Boosting the cabin’s premium feel is the now standard Burgundy upholstery.

For convenience, the Mazda CX-9 Ignite edition provides Android Auto and Apple CarPlay smartphone integration on the nine-inch touchscreen head unit. Wireless connection is available for Apple CarPlay, but not for Android Auto. Also provided in the CX-9 is a 360° camera, a coloured head-up display, a 12-speaker Bose sound system, and tri-zone air conditioning.

Safety and driver aids include six airbags, Mazda’s G-Vectoring Control Plus, Off-road Traction Assist, hill-start assist, and i-ActivSense driver assistance system. The i-ActiveSense consists of features like Lane Departure Warning, Lane Keep Assist, Blind Spot Monitor, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, and autonomous braking for the front and rear. Included in the price of the car is a five-year/100,000 km warranty. Also included is a five-year/100,000 km free maintenance package.
