The upcoming 2022 BMW M2 could be offered with xDrive all-wheel drive

Aside from just sharing the M3’s engine and braking system, the upcoming next-generation BMW M2 could also be getting its elder brother’s xDrive all-wheel drive system, if a leaked technical document published on Bimmerpost is anything to go by.

This is the first time we’ve heard about an all-wheel drive M2, as previous leaks and teasers from BMW have all fixated on the “traditional” rear-wheel drive layout, alongside its six-speed manual transmission as standard.

The internal service memo published on the Bimerpost forum suggests that the all-wheel drive system on the upcoming BMW M2 xDrive will be borrowed directly from the larger M3/M4 xDrive, and will also come with the same drive modes selector to offer “outstanding traction” and “further improved driving dynamics” in varying conditions.

The document also states that the AWD system will accommodate a maximum transmissible torque of 1,300 Nm, which means don’t worry – there’s still plenty of headroom for you tuners to pile up the power output.

Performance figures have yet to be officially confirmed by BMW just yet, but the M2 will utilise the same 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged inline-six engine from the M3 and M4, rumoured to be detuned slightly down to around 450 hp to differentiate itself from the elder siblings. For context, the base BMW M4 makes 473 hp and 550 Nm.

The all-new 2022 BMW M2 is scheduled to make its official debut in October this year, although it’s not clear if the xDrive variant (if it even exists) will be unveiled at the same time, or only introduced at a later date.
