The venerable Toyota Vios has received a facelift update here in Malaysia, with minor changes to its equipment list and exterior aesthetic. For those who are looking for a new B-segment sedan for your everyday needs, here’s everything you need to know about the 2020 Toyota Vios facelift.
In terms of styling changes, almost every single change can be found on the front of the Toyota Vios. Most noticeably, the grille has now been flipped from the old “Joker” face to a more aggressive shape, while the fog lamp housings on both ends are inspired by the all-new Toyota Corolla.
Triple bezel LED headlights are also standard across the range, which is a marked improvement over the outgoing model which only has halogen-illuminated units even on the range-topping model. The 2020 Toyota Vios facelift rides on 15- or 16-inch wheels depending on the variant.
Aside from the core variants though, UMW Toyota also surprised us with the Vios GR-S during the announcement, which takes the 1.5 G variant and adds on a couple of extra enthusiast-focused kit tacked on for a sportier driving experience. The Vios GR-S is the first locally-engineered model to feature the Gazoo Racing Sport badge.
These extras include a variant-specific GR Sport grille, GR-S Aerokit with variant-specific bumper lips, side skirts, and spoilers, as well as 17-inch blacked-out alloy wheels. But most importantly, the Vios GR-S also gains a sports-tuned suspension set-up for more stability in corners.
Both the “regular” Toyota Vios and the Vios GR-S are both powered by the 2NR-FE 1.5-litre Dual VVT-i naturally-aspirated four-cylinder engine. Power output is rated at 107 hp and 140 Nm, which is unchanged from before. The Vios GR-S variant does get a “10-speed CVT transmission”, while the core variants retains the old seven-speed CVT.
Prices for the 2020 Toyota Vios line-up starts at RM74,623 for the entry-level 1.5 J variant, and tops out at RM95,284 for the Vios GR-S, all prices on the road, without insurance, and inclusive of the sales-tax exemptions valid until the end of the year.
