2016 Toyota Innova launched in Malaysia, priced from RM109k to RM126k

Losing the title of Malaysia’s best-selling non-national car maker early last year was a huge wakeup call for UMW Toyota. Having to face stiff competition from both national and non-national makes that are continuously offering greater value for money, 2016 is a make or break year for the dethroned king to redeem themselves in the eyes of Malaysian consumers.

UMW’s game plan was simple – to refresh their entire product lineup to be on par – or better – with its competitors. So far, we have seen seven model launches (all-new and facelift alike) from UMW to date and UMW is not showing signs of stopping just yet. Unveiled at the concourse of KLCC is the second-generation Toyota Innova. Unfortunately, VSC is not standard across the range.2016 Toyota Innova Media Test Drive

EXTERIOR

Toyota has adopted the “Tough and Sophisticated” design language to introduce a more elegant look to the Innova. As standard, the Innova comes with automatic halogen headlamps with Follow Me Home function, bulb type daytime running lights, silver painted radiator grille, electronic adjustable wing mirrors with integrated turn signals, rear spoiler with LED third brake light, halogen combination tail lamps and rear fog lamps.2016 Toyota Innova 2.0L Launch in Malaysia - AutoBuzz.my

Stepping up to the G variant adds a front chrome radiator grille, front fog lamps, power folding wing mirrors with integrated turn signals and puddle lamp, keyless entry as well as chrome door handles.

All variants ride on 16-inch twin five-spoke alloys wrapped in 205/65 profile Bridgestone Ecopia EP150 tyres.

INTERIOR

Toyota has certainly paid great detail to elevate the premium feel of the interior as the cabin is a breath of fresh air compared to the outgoing Innova. Even for the E-spec Innova comes with urethane three-spoke multifunctional steering wheel, silver dash trim, manual climate controls, fabric seats with manual adjustment, two-tier glove box with cooling function, One Touch Tumble second row seats with 60:40 split configuration and One Touch Easy Space Up third row seats with 50:50 seats.2016 Toyota Innova Media Test Drive

Moving up to the G variant, the cabin is further refined with a leather wrapped multifunctional steering wheel with wood inlays, wood interior trim, front and rear single-zone automatic climate controls, keyless start, auto up/down with jam protection for all windows (driver side only for E-spec), foldable tray, ambient lighting and Easy Closer Back Door (vacuum tailgate).

All three variants come equipped with a 2-DIN head unit with six-speakers, however customers can choose to upgrade to an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with reverse camera for RM2,990 (with GPS navigation) or RM1,990 (without navigation).

PERFORMANCE

Powering the people mover is the same 2.0-litre naturally aspirated four-cylinder 1TR-FE with Dual VVT-i found in the outgoing Innova. When mated to either a five-speed manual or six-speed automatic with Sequential Shifter, it sends 137 hp and 183 Nm of torque (up 3 hp and 1 Nm) to the rear-wheels. Regardless of transmission choice, the Innova comes with three selectable drive modes – Eco, Normal and Power. To that effect, the Innova also earns itself the EEV status. 2016 Toyota Innova Media Test Drive

SAFETY

The top of the range G-spec Innova is equipped with seven airbags, ABS with EBD, BA, VSC, hill-start assist as well as Emergency Stop Signal. With these safety features equipped, the Innova earns itself a 5-Star crash safety rating from ASEAN NCAP.2016 Toyota Innova Media Test Drive

However, the lower range models only make do with three airbags and ABS with EBD.

WHAT ELSE?

Toyota is offering the Innova in six exterior colours: Attitude Black, Grey Metallic, Silver Metallic, Medium Silver Metallic, Avant-Garde Bronze Metallic and Super White II. Every new purchase of the Innova comes with a 5-Year unlimited mileage warranty package and is transferable to the second-hand owner when the car is sold off..
