2016 Toyota Hilux to arrive in Malaysia really soon, may cost from RM93k

We brought you news in February that UMW Toyota will be launching three key products in the second and third quarters this year, and they are the Toyota Hilux, Alphard and Vellfire. We are however, closer to the official debut of the all-new Hilux, so here’s a preview of the top-of-the-line 2.8G variant we saw at the Bangkok Motor Show.

The eight-generation workhorse has been on sale in Thailand since June 2015 and is available in many trims, beginning from a single cab 2.4 4×2 manual and twin cab 2.4 4×2 manual; 2.4 Standard 4×4 manual, 2.4G 4×4 manual and 2.4G 4×4 auto models. Indicative prices (not confirmed) are said to range between RM93k to RM135k, which could spell bad news for some.2016 Toyota Hilux at Bangkok - AutoBuzz.my

We’ve also highlighted on the advanced new engines powering this Hilux, but here’s a recap, just in case. At launch, two engines will be offered – a 2.4-litre or 2.8-litre diesel engines, both inline-fours and turbocharged. The former makes 148 hp at 3,400 rpm and 330 Nm of torque from 1,600 to 2,000 rpm, whereas the larger motor produces 174 hp at 3,400 rpm and 450 Nm of torque from 1,600 to 2,400 rpm.

The 2.8G 4×4 Auto here comes with all the bells and whistles, but can they justify the RM135k asking price? We’ll break them down for you. Features offered on the range topper here include LED projector headlights, LED daytime running lights, 18-inch alloy wheels (Malaysian-spec will differ in design, and they look sportier), leather-wrapped steering wheel, eight-way powered driver seats, leather upholstered seats and a touchscreen head unit.2016 Toyota Hilux at Bangkok - AutoBuzz.my

However, Malaysian-bound Hiluxes will not receive automatic air conditioning system, bold front bumpers and plastic body claddings on the outside. The beige leather upholstery you see here will also be omitted from our market, but hey, at least we get the cool Optitron instrument cluster, right? To add salt to injury, only the 2.4G and 2.8G (auto variants only) will come with Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), Active Traction Control and Hill-Start Assist Control.

With everyone else putting in their best foot in the pickup segment, it’s crucial for the Hilux to bring the right ingredients to the table. Stay tuned for more updates!
