Honda has chopped up the Honda Civic Type R into a pickup truck…

We have seen some exciting and quirky concept cars from Honda like the Honda Sports Vision Gran Turismo and Sports EV. But nothing had prepared us for their latest work, the Honda Civic Type R Pickup Truck concept. Yes, you read that right, a Type R Pickup Truck…

Displayed at the annual SMMT (Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders) Test Day, the Civic Type R has been reimagined into a utility vehicle by a Product Engineering team from the Honda UK Manufacturing (HUM) factory in Swindon. The team even has plans to take their creation to the Nürburgring and try to claim the title of fastest front wheel drive pickup truck.

Project Lead, Alyn James commented, “We have a special projects division at the factory in Swindon and this project was a fantastic opportunity for the team to show just what their creative minds could do. The passion that our engineers have for Honda is shown in our latest creation and we are even considering taking it to the Nürburgring to see if we can take the record for the fastest front wheel drive pickup truck!”

Project P concept, as it is called, is based on a pre-production model and has been completely redesigned from the B-pillar onwards, chopping off the sweeping roofline and rear seats for a flatbed loading area. Its massive rear wing, triple exhaust tips and flared rear arches are retained for “maximum racing capability on track”.

Mechanics of the car have been left untouched from the 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder V-TEC engine to the adaptive suspension – meaning this pickup truck packs 315 hp and 400 Nm of torque as well as a six-speed manual transmission. Century sprint and top speed are identical to the record-breaking car at 5.8 seconds and 271 km/h.

Head of Car at Honda UK Phil Webb added, “This Civic Type R Pickup Truck concept by the special team at our Swindon-based plant demonstrates the passion and commitment of the team there – going above and beyond outside working hours to deliver the final product. There are no plans to put this into production, but we will be using it to transport our lawn and garden products as and when required!”
