At the launch of the A4 B9, Audi Malaysia revealed plans to expand their product lineup to swing more buyers towards the brand. We have just received word from Audi Malaysia that the all-new Audi Q2 is set to arrive on our shores in the first half of 2017, and it’s possibly coming with two engine choices – the 1.0-litre TFSI and 1.4-litre TFSI.
After clarification with Audi Malaysia, the Q2 is not a direct competitor to the Mercedes GLA, instead it goes up against the MINI Countryman. However, it still bears the classification of a compact SUV.
In the UK, the all-new Q2 is available in showrooms since mid-November 2016. Hence, for Audi Malaysia to introduce this model in the next seven months (in CBU form) is a commendable action. For UK-bound models, the 1.4-litre four-cylinder TFSI petrol engine that produces 148 hp is mated to either a six-speed manual or a seven-speed S Tronic automatic transmission that drives the front wheels. Expect the Malaysian market to receive the same S Tronic and FWD setup.
On the other hand, should the 1.0-litre three-cylinder TFSI be introduced to our market, the mill is capable of churning a respectable 114 hp. It will also get the same seven-speed S Tronic and front-wheel drive configuration.
To recap, the UK Q2 comes equipped with progressive Audi smartphone interface and Audi pre-sense front with pedestrian recognition. Optional features include Audi Virtual Cockpit, Audi Phone Box wireless charging, Bang & Olufsen sound system, heads-up display, adaptive cruise control with Stop & Go function and Traffic Jam Assist, Audi Active Lane Assist, rear cross-traffic assist and emergency assist. Wheel options range from 17- to 19-inches of varying designs.
Only time will tell what the Malaysian spec Q2 would carry, but judging from the A4 B9, we can trust Audi Malaysia to at least match its competitors. In this case, the RM199k to RM314k MINI Countryman.
