If you have been following closely on BMW’s development, 2-door models or the coupes from the basic line-up now have their own badge, or rather number.

The sportier, sleekier and sexier 4 Series has a new variant that just arrived topless in Malaysia. The BMW 428i Convertible.

EXTERIOR

Derived from the BMW 3 Series Convertible, this topless beauty is now longer by 26mm (4,638mm length) and 43mm wider (1,825mm width). Wheelbase has been increased by 50mm (2,810mm wheelbase), wider front track by 45mm (1,545mm front track) and 81mm wider rear track (1,545mm rear track).

The distinctive feature, which is of course the main reason people buy this is the convertible hardtop. The car can transform from an elegant coupe to a sleek roadster in just 20 seconds. So, would you be able to fold the roof while on the move? Yes, but only at a maximum speed of 18km/h. The three-part retractable hardtop is folded and put away into the boot. That takes up the entire boot by the way.

However, there’s a good news! You can now have some boot space even with the roof retracted, via an electro-hydraulic loading assistance system that pivots and positions the folded roof. This ensure maximum utilization of the 220 litres available storage space. With the top up, boot space is measured at 370 litres. It comes in 18-inch Multi-spoke allow rims.

INTERIOR

The BMW 4 Series Convertible does come with some pretty good equipment that makes driving it special. One of them is the electromechanical steering with Servotronic, providing speed-dependent power steering support.

It is also equipped with Adaptive M Suspension with electronically controlled damper enabling the car to adapt to driving situations. Driving Experience Control is offered as standard, which offers three different vehicle set-ups for economical, comfortable and sporty driving options.

The cabin upholstery and trim is top notch offering a premium ambience, with its sport leather steering wheel, circular black-panel dials and the iDrive center display. The one-piece rear seat can be folded flat down for the extra compartment space from the boot.

PERFORMANCE

The BMW 428i Convertible is powered by a 2.0-litre four cylinder BMW TwinPower Turbo engine. No, not a 2.8-litre engine. It produces 245hp and 350Nm of torque. It accelerates from 0 to 100km/h in just 6.4 seconds, with a top speed of 250km/h. Fuel consumption is at quite an impressive figure of 6.6 litre per 100km.
