All-new Proton X50 enters Trinidad and Tobago – second export market for the SUV

The all-new Proton X50 has been launched in Trinidad and Tobago, marking the model’s second export market after its launch in Brunei earlier this year.

The launch of the Proton X50 in Trinidad and Tobago builds on Proton’s goals of expanding its global footprint. Proton expects the X50 to play a significant role in its export initiative, having accounted for 29% of Proton’s 6,000 export units in 2025.

Unlike in Brunei, the Proton X50 in Trinidad and Tobago is only offered in one singular variant: the 1.5 TD Premium. Sharing the same specifications as the mid-level variant we have in Malaysia, the car is kitted with the larger 18-inch wheels with red brake callipers, roof rails, leather upholstery, power-adjustable driver’s seat, interior ambient lighting, and more.

As the Premium variant, the X50 comes equipped with the full suite of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), including adaptive cruise control (ACC) with intelligent cruise control (ICC), autonomous emergency braking (AEB), forward collision warning (FCW), and a 360-degree surround view camera with a 180-degree transparent view.

Under the bonnet is the new 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine, first introduced in the all-new X50. It produces 181 hp and 290 Nm of torque, and sends power to the front wheels (FWD) via a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT), completing the 0-100 km/h sprint in 7.6 seconds.

Emphasising the importance of its launch in the country, Chief Executive Officer of Proton International Corporation (PICSB), Edmund Lim Meng Thong, said, “Trinidad and Tobago is a key market for PROTON in the Caribbean region and plays an important role in our broader export strategy. The introduction of the all-new Proton X50 there reflects our confidence in the market’s growth potential as well as the strength of our local partnership.”

Proton currently has three models on sale in Trinidad and Tobago. These models consist of the Proton X90, the Proton eMAS 7 (stylised as e.MAS 7) and the newly introduced Proton X50.

“Moving into 2026, PICSB is committed to further expanding our export footprint by introducing new models, strengthening our distribution network, and increasing overall export volumes across multiple regions. These efforts will encompass both Proton’s internal combustion engine (ICE) and electric vehicle (EV) models as we strive to bring Proton products and our brand values to more buyers globally,” Edmund added.
