All-new 9th-gen Toyota Hilux debuts in Malaysia in BEV form – 257 km range, RM226k

Marking the debut of the all-new ninth-generation Toyota Hilux here in Malaysia, albeit as a fully-electric (EV) model. The Toyota Hilux BEV is now launched in Malaysia priced at RM226,300, on-the-road, without insurance, inclusive of private registration costs.

Clad in an exterior designed around the ‘Cyber Sumo’ styling concept, the Hilux BEV looks unapologetically rugged while embracing its new electric identity.

Between the sleek LED headlights, the aerodynamic 17-inch alloy wheels, and an enclosed front grille, it looks like something out of a sci-fi film. However, lest you forget this is still a workhorse at heart, the massive Toyota wordmark remains embossed into the tailgate to remind everyone that it is still a pickup truck underneath the cyberpunk makeup.

Standard exterior features of the Toyota Hilux BEV includes:

  • LED headlights with auto leveling
  • LED daytime running lights (DRLs), front turn indicators, and front fog lamps
  • Painted power-adjustable and automatic retractable side mirrors with integrated turn indicators
  • LED tailights and third brake light
  • Bedliner for the pickup truck bed
  • Sharkfin antenna
  • 17-inch alloy wheels

In contrast to the futuristic exterior, the interior of the Hilux BEV remains reassuringly conventional, which is perhaps for the better. The three-spoke steering wheel is a new design featuring thinner spokes for better grip and large physical multifunction controls.

However, the rest of the switchgear, including the ergonomic shift-by-wire gear selector and electronic parking brake, feels as though it was plucked straight from the standard Toyota parts bin to maintain a sense of familiarity.

Multimedia is handled by a 12.3-inch centre infotainment display with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support that is paired to an eight-speaker sound system. This is supplemented by a 12.3-inch fully-digital metre cluster for the driver.

Other interior equipment on the Toyota Hilux BEV includes:

  • Combination leather upholstery
  • Eight-way power adjustable driver seat with two-way lumbar support
  • Four-way manually adjustable front passenger seat
  • 60:40 split folding rear seats with armrest
  • 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment display with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster
  • Smart entry and start system
  • Electrochromic rearview mirror
  • One touch auto up and down for all windows
  • Electronic parking brake
  • Wireless charging pad
  • Three USB ports and one 12V socket
  • RFID tag
  • Front digital video recorder

The Toyota Hilux BEV is powered by two traction motors, one on the front axle and the other on the rear. The front motor generates 111 hp/206 Nm, while the rear motor delivers 175 hp/267 Nm. Combined, they produce 196 hp (144kW), but UMW Toyota has not disclosed the combined torque output. Paired to a 59.2 kWh battery pack, the Toyota Hilux BEV has a range of 257 km (WLTP).

Charging is supported with 10 kW AC, requiring 6.5 hours to charge from 10-100%. DC charging is supported at 150 kW, taking approximately 30 minutes for a 10-80% top up.

According to UMW Toyota, the Hilux BEV is the first Hilux to feature electric power steering (EPS) for easier manoeuvring in both on and off-road driving, and boasts a payload capacity of 750 kg, comparable to other Toyota Hilux double-cab variants.

The Toyota Hilux BEV also features a new de Dion rigid leafspring rear suspension setup, adapted for the traction motor without compromising its durability or the Hilux BEV’s off-road capabilities. Maximum payload capacity is rated at 750 kg, with a towing capacity of 2,000 kg.

UMW Toyota states the Hilux BEV’s approach and departure angles are similar to its gasoline-powered siblings, although specific figures were not disclosed. It also states that the Hilux BEV has a water wading capability of up to 700 mm. The standard tyres can be swapped for dedicated off-road tyres, but this will affect the range and noise levels due to increased rolling resistance.

The Toyota Hilux BEV features a Multi-Terrain Select system, a first for a Toyota electric vehicle. It includes five modes, which are Rock, Sand, Mud, Dirt, and Mogul mode for bumpy surfaces. The system manages drive force, braking, and torque to maintain traction across these different off-road conditions.

For safety systems, the Toyota Hilux BEV is equipped with the Toyota Safety Sense (TSS) suite of ADAS features, which includes:

  • Dynamic radar cruise control (DRCC)
  • Lane tracing assist (LTA)
  • Blind spot monitor (BSM)
  • Rear-cross traffic alert (RCTA)
  • Automatic high beam (AHB)
  • Panoramic view monitor (PVM)
  • Road sign assist (RSA)
  • Tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS)
  • Emergency stop signal (ESS)
  • Downhill assist control (DAC)

The Toyota Hilux BEV includes smartphone connectivity via the Toyota Remote app, which provides several safety and convenience functions. Owners can access safety features, including stolen vehicle tracking, a remote immobiliser, and an unplug alert if the charging cable is disconnected.

The app also allows for remote monitoring of the dashboard status and odometer, alongside remote control functions for the doors, lights, and air conditioning. Additionally, the system supports emergency calls and provides vehicle health diagnostic reports.

Priced at RM226,300, the Toyota Hilux BEV includes a five-year/150,000 km warranty and an eight-year, unlimited-mileage battery pack warranty that can be extended for two years, priced RM5,700.
