All-new MG 4X compact EV SUV squares up against BYD Atto 2 with semi-solid-state battery tech

Despite the crossover craze, MG’s small-EV endeavours so far have been restricted to just the MG4 hatchback… until now. The Sino-British brand will finally be joining the compact crossover EV segment with the MG 4X, revealed in first photos ahead of the Auto China show in Beijing next month – and as the name suggests, it’ll be a B-segment SUV based on the aforementioned MG4.

You’d think the “X” in the name would stand for crossover, but according to Chinese publication Yiche, it actually signifies “infinite possibilities”… whatever that means. Either way, the MG 4X is set to take on the BYD Atto 2, with dimensions measuring 4,395 mm long, 1,842 mm wide, and 1,551 mm tall, with a 2,750 mm wheelbase according to CarNewsChina.

Styling wise, the MG 4X has adopted many design elements from its elder sibling, the MG S5, albeit with a very different front-end look, featuring larger LED headlights that are joined by a full-width light bar. The tail lights, though, appear to be largely identical to those on the S5, at least when viewed from the side.

Not much has been shared on its interior yet, although we expect it to largely mirror the cabin design of the all-new second-generation MG4, with a massive (up to 15.8-inch) infotainment screen in the centre of the dashboard, with smartphone integration features in China designed specifically to work with Oppo devices.

Its electric powertrain should also largely follow that of the hatchback, including the semi-solid-state battery pack option as seen on the MG4 Anxin Edition, which promises improved safety especially in terms of thermal runaway incidences. On the MG 4X, the company claims that it’ll provide up to 510 km of range, albeit based on the more lenient CLTC test cycle.

The company has not revealed any export plans for the new compact crossover yet, but the MG 4X could certainly prove a very popular model globally. Closer to home, MG has only recently begun CKD local assembly works for the MG S5 at the EP Manufacturing Berhad (EPMB) plant in Melaka.
