Been seeing a lot of the all-new Proton Saga on the roads? Well, that’s not a surprise, and with 74,013 bookings recorded to date since its launch in late November last year, it’s going to become an even more common sight.
In fact, the figure, revealed by Proton CEO Li Chunrong during the company’s Chinese New Year media gathering yesterday, is the highest achieved by the compact sedan in the past 14 years. Good news, then, as the company is banking on the Saga to help achieve its 200,000-unit sales target for 2026, and reclaim its crown as the best-selling car model in Malaysia.
To drive this growth, Li says the AMA-based (Advanced Modular Architecture) Saga will also be exported to the Philippines and Latin America as a Geely-badged model, in addition Proton’s usual overseas markets.
Closer to home, Proton announced earlier this month that deliveries has already breached 10,000 units, with around 30,000 units booked. Those figures should be a lot higher by now.

Additionally, the company also plans to reclaim its market share with a series of models targeting the sub-RM80,000 segment. These will include a model code-named AMA 02, slated for a 2026 launch, followed by the AMA 05 and AMA 06 in 2027.
We don’t know yet what these models are exactly, but Proton revealed previously that the trio will consist of two SUV/crossover models, and an MPV. Based on the modular AMA platform, they will all share some 60% of their parts, enabling rapid development and production.
A key enabler for the shared components is also the BHE15 1.5-litre engine, which can be adapted into not just naturally aspirated (Saga) or turbocharged (X50, X70) forms, but also to be used in hybrid, and plug-in hybrid configurations.
This new lineup of AMA-based models will officially succeed the PISE series, consisting of the Persona, Iriz, Exora, and the Saga. While production of the Exora and Iriz has already ended, the Persona is expected to follow suit within the year.
