All-new 2025 MG4 begins mass production in China – global launch expected in Q4

Following its debut in March this year, the all-new 2025 MG4 has now begun mass production in China, with the first units of the compact electric hatchback now rolling off SAIC Motor’s assembly line in Nanjing.

In a Weibo post, the company revealed that the second-generation 2025 MG4 will be officially launched in the Middle Kingdom in August this year. For global markets, exports are expected to begin with Europe in Q4 2025 – although us Malaysians might need to wait a little longer, given that the previous-generation model was only made available here last year.

The all-new 2025 MG4 will arrive as a considerably larger car than its predecessor, carrying a more youthful – yet more refined – design language all round. You’ll find less sharp angles and aggressive lines, and the rounded lighting elements both front and back should help the hatchback appeal to a wider audience.

No interior photos have been unveiled yet, but recent leaks suggest that it’ll be a screen-centric affair, with a big centre screen taking the spotlight of the otherwise minimalist (read: buttonless) cabin. The larger dimensions should also translate to more interior space, too.

Official specifications for the all-new 2025 MG4 has not yet been confirmed, although a regulatory filing with China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) has revealed that it’ll still retain its single-motor rear-wheel drive layout, with outputs rated at 163 hp – 7 hp lower than the outgoing base model that’s available in Malaysia.

Despite the lower outputs, actual driving experience might not differ that much (or could even be better), as the all-new second-generation model weighs in a significant 156 kg lighter than the previous model.

2024 MG4 X-Power

Nearer to home, the first-generation MG4 is now available in Malaysia in four variants, with prices starting at RM103,999 for the Standard variant, topping out at RM158,999 for the performance-oriented X-Power variant. The latter sports a dual motor setup with outputs rated at 435 hp and 600 Nm, sufficient to push the electric hatchback from 0-100 km/h in just 3.8 seconds.

All variants of the MG4 in Malaysia are fully imported (CBU) from China, although we’re unsure if this would continue to be the case when the second-generation model arrives here on our shores, given that the tax break for CBU electric vehicles is slated to end by the end of this year.
