For 40 years, the Proton Saga has remained the national carmaker’s best-selling model. Since its debut in 1985, it has quickly become a crowd-favourite with over two million units sold worldwide. While the humble Saga has evolved in many ways over the years to meet changing demands, it has consistently stayed true to its core purpose — meeting the everyday commuting needs of the people. To back the Saga’s reputation, Proton has shared some statistics for its birthday, highlighting the every-day-car’s impact.
According to Proton, of the 57,674 survey samples it has taken last year, 64% of Saga buyers are first-time car buyers. Another 18% of buyers are additional car buyers, while the remaining 17% are replacement car buyers. Interestingly, 48% of respondents were married with children — a testament to the Saga’s versatility that fulfils the commuting needs of families.
Proton also highlights significant quality improvements in the Saga. By adopting the Global Consumer Product Audit (GCPA) – a quality audit that rates production line issues based on their severity, with a lower score indicating a higher quality – Proton successfully reduced the Saga’s GCPA score from 2,580 points in August 2024 to just 1,050 points by May 2025.
As a result, Proton now claims that the Saga’s quality is “on par with their closest competitor”, likely referring to the Perodua Bezza, further building on the confidence in the brand’s best-selling model.
Vehicle Program Executive, John Pinto, said, “With its strong national appeal, practical features, and a growing list of satisfied owners, the Saga is more than just a car. As we celebrate its 40th anniversary this year, this enduring icon remains a symbol of the nation’s progress, mobility, and everyday achievement, still driving Malaysia forward, one family and first-time owner at a time.”
“The journey continues, and with a new model on the horizon, the Saga is set to redefine its legacy for generations to come,” he added.
