The Johor Green Development Committee has set a goal of having 15,840 electric vehicles (EV) registered in Johor by 2030, reports The Star. Simultaneously, a goal of building 1,245 EV charging stations is also set to cater to the future number of EVs on Johor’s roads.
According to Johor executive councillor Ling Tian Soon, Road Transport Department (JPJ) records show that there are currently 977 EVs registered in Johor. Furthermore, there are currently only 377 EV charging stations statewide.
By increasing the availability and accessibility of EV charging stations, not only will it support the increased number of EVs, it’ll also cater to Singaporean visitors and thus contribute to Johor’s state income. Singapore has previously announced its plans to completely phase out internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles by 2040.
In addition to the EV policy, the committee has also introduced a renewable energy policy of achieving 600 megawatts (MW) of renewable energy by 2030. Ling says that Johor currently has a total renewable energy of 199MW.

“To achieve this, over the next few years, we will encourage both local and foreign investments in the renewable energy sector,” he says, adding that renewable technologies will find its way to other sectors such as hotels, factories, and residential properties.
Separately, the Johor Green Development Committee has also introduced a key policy to combat climate issues, especially floods. Ling says that the policy ensures that local councils take flood risks into consideration before any development projects can be approved.
Nationwide, the Malaysia government has previously announced its goal of 10,000 charging stations by the end of 2025. As of the time of writing, the PLANMalaysia EV charger dashboard lists 3,354 EV chargers currently in operation across Malaysia, translating to 33% of the goal.
Despite the aggressive timeline, Minister of International Trade and Industry (MITI) Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz said in October last year that the country is still on target to achieve its 10,000-charger goal. According to the dashboard, there are currently 4,235 proposed EV charger locations that have not been constructed yet.
PLANMalaysia has also previously detailed its plans for EV charger distribution in order to reach its 2025 goal, in which, Johor is expected to feature some 1,100 EV chargers statewide by the end of 2025.
