Proton sold 10,999 cars in June 2024, down 12% from May amid softer TIV

Proton has reported that it sold a total of 10,999 cars in June 2024, resulting in a year-to-date sales figure of 73,696 units. The monthly sales figure for June is 12.16% down from May amid the softer total industry volume (TIV) in Malaysia. The year-to-date sales figure is also down, with a 4.69% from the first half of 2023.

Proton forecasts the TIV for June to be softer than any other month in 2024. The company estimated that the industry sold 57,700 cars in June, which is even lower than the TIV in April 2024. The year-to-date TIV, however, is estimated to be 386,600 units, which is nearly 20,000 units more than the same period in 2023.

In the month of June 2024, Proton’s best-selling model was its usual Proton Saga with 5,441 units sold. Reflecting the overall sales, the Saga also saw a shrink in sales by 678 units. Following behind the Proton Saga in terms of sales numbers is the X50 with 1,711 units, the S70 with 1,440 units, the Persona with 1,309 units, the X70 with 481 units, the Iriz with 369 units, and the X90 with 248 units. Last seen in the May sales report with 1 unit sold, the Exora is no longer to be found in Proton’s sales report.

In June, Proton introduced its new EV sub-brand, Proton e.MAS, which was later announced as now being fully managed by Proton’s subsidiary, Pro-Net. From the launch event, the first fully electric car by Proton may make its debut by the fourth quarter of 2024.

In the same month, Proton also hit its 5-million unit production milestone with a Proton X90 Flagship being the 5-millionth vehicle produced. The new refreshed 2024 Proton X50 was also launched, introducing new enhancements to Proton’s B-segment SUV.

Proton Edar Chief Executive Officer, Roslan Abdullah said, “The first six months of 2024 have been a period of consolidation for Proton as we invested in strategic moves that will benefit our future. So, while the plant shutdown resulted in a short-term effect on our sales numbers, the efficiencies gained as a result of the work performed will help us to catch up in the second half of the year.”

“We are also pleased to see our recent launch of the 2024 Proton X50 has been met with strong demand from the market. The model remains as the best option for those looking for a B-segment SUV and we expect a similar reaction from the market when we unveil the heavily revised 2025 Proton X70. With a new model launch from Smart just around the corner and the impending arrival of the first EV model from e.MAS, the market can expect more positive developments from Proton for the second half of the year.”
