Good news for those of you who have been waiting for the Volvo EX90! Production of the large EV SUV by Volvo has finally begun as announced by the company on June 5, 2024. First unveiled to the world back in November 2022, Volvo announced in May 2023 that production of the EX90 had to be delayed as the company needed additional time to develop its advanced software.
Being produced at Volvo’s factory outside of Charleston, South Carolina, first customer deliveries are scheduled to begin in the second half of 2024. Upon its debut, the EX90 was the first “EX” series Volvo. It was later followed by the all-new EX30 and the EX40 (the renamed XC40 Recharge Pure Electric). The EX90 will be built alongside the S60 sedan at the same plant.

Volvo Chief Executive Officer, Jim Rowan said, “The fully electric Volvo EX90 is the start of a new era for Volvo Cars – a new era for safety, sustainability and human-centric technology. The EX90 is proudly manufactured in the USA and reflects our long-term commitment to our people in South Carolina and the broader US market.”
The “EX” name isn’t the only Volvo-first feature of the EX90. It also features a roof-mounted LiDAR sensor which is capable of measuring ranges with high precision and fidelity. Its new design language is also a Volvo-first and it has made its way onto the EX30 and EM90.

The EX90 packs a 111-kWh battery pack, enabling it to be driven for up to 600 km on a single charge (WLTP). Charging can be done at a maximum rate of 250 kW with DC charging and this takes 30 minutes to juice up from 10% to 80%. Propulsion is done via a dual-motor setup that makes 517 hp and 910 Nm.
The Volvo EX90 is slowly making its way to Malaysia, but as stated by Volvo Car Malaysia, we will likely welcome the smaller EX30 first. Volvo’s EV lineup in Malaysia currently consists of the Volvo C40 Recharge Pure Electric and the Volvo XC40 Recharge Pure Electric. Their names have yet to be updated for the Malaysian market.
