Chery Omoda 5 rear axle recall now 96% complete, JPJ actively monitoring progress

Chery Malaysia’s recall exercise for the viral rear axle issue is now 95.8% complete, with only 25 vehicles left to be inspected, said Minister of Transport Anthony Loke at a press conference yesterday.

The recall process, which the Ministry of Transport (JPJ) says they are actively monitoring, involves 600 “potentially affected” Chery Omoda 5 vehicles due to an improperly calibrated welding machine in the production process that could cause a failure in the rear axle.

Chery Malaysia in a previous statement said that it has identified a total of 60 vehicles affected by the issue, but has recalled 600 units for inspection at its service centres to ensure roadworthiness and the safety of their customers. All 600 customers have already been contacted, with the recall process expected to be completed by the end of June 2024.

The Minister said that JPJ has contacted Chery Malaysia on May 2 for further investigation into the issue to ensure the safety of road users. Chery Malaysia, on the other hand, said in its previous statement that it has “voluntarily arranged a meeting” to brief the ministry on the cause and recall process of the issue.

Aside from Malaysia, Chery has also recently carried out voluntary recall exercises in Indonesia (420 units, Omoda 5) and the Philippines (90 units, Tiggo 5X Pro) for similar welding issues.

In a separate viral issue in Malaysia, the Chery Omoda 5 has also received widespread attention due to an alleged brake malfunction, although the carmaker said that a third-party investigation done by Puspakom did not reveal any issues with the vehicle.
