Proton now exports powertrain components for Geely cars sold internationally

Proton announced that its engine plant in Tanjung Malim is now exporting components for cars sold under Geely in Vietnam, Mexico, and South Africa.

Located within the Automotive High-Tech Valley (AHTV), this engine assembly plant has been operational since 2022. It has since grown from solely assembling engines into a comprehensive manufacturing hub producing components for internal combustion engines, hybrid electric vehicles, plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, and electric vehicles, alongside engines, transmissions, and electric drive units supporting current and future Proton models as well as the aforementioned international Geely products.

As the only carmaker in the country assembling such a diverse line-up, the facility currently handles everything from turbocharged and naturally aspirated engines to dedicated hybrid engines, dual-clutch and hybrid transmissions, and electric drive units. This extensive range introduces new manufacturing technologies directly into the local automotive ecosystem.

Boasting a design capacity of 240,000 engines annually, the facility has continuously expanded to cope with domestic and export demand. Since its launch, Proton has invested over RM121 million to expand production capabilities for engines, transmissions, and electrified powertrain components, with plans to increase capacity up to 400,000 units annually by 2028.

On the production floor, the assembly line has steadily increased its automation using collaborative robots, AI-based inspection systems, and advanced quality assurance processes to boost manufacturing efficiency and ensure consistent product quality.

Currently, the facility works with 16 suppliers, half of which are Malaysian companies, lowering the reliance on imported components while enhancing the competitiveness and technical capabilities of local automotive vendors.

Furthermore, more than 500 personnel are employed at the facility, with over 50 local employees having undergone training programmes in China to bring advanced manufacturing knowledge back to Malaysia.

‘As the Automotive High-Tech Valley continues to develop, facilities such as this will help attract suppliers, create skilled employment opportunities and establish Malaysia as a regional hub for advanced automotive technologies,’ said Proton Deputy Chief Executive Officer Dato’ Ir. Abdul Rashid Musa.

“The fact that we are assembling products for internal combustion, hybrid, plug-in hybrid and electric vehicles demonstrates our readiness to support the industry’s evolving needs while ensuring Malaysia remains competitive in a rapidly changing mobility landscape,” he added.
