Is the all-new Mercedes-Benz VLE the most luxurious MPV to date?

We’ve seen plenty of electric luxury MPVs lately — especially from China — with many boldly claiming to be the next “Alphard killer,” or even the most luxurious MPV ever made. To be fair, some do offer an impressive level of comfort and tech, but if anyone truly understands luxury, it’s Mercedes-Benz. And with the debut of the new Mercedes-Benz VLE, the German marque may have just settled the debate once and for all.

The Mercedes-Benz VLE clearly carries the brand’s latest design language, similar to what we’ve already seen on models like the Mercedes-Benz GLC and Mercedes-Benz CLA. The exterior panels are sculpted to create an incredibly sleek and streamlined silhouette, allowing for a drag coefficient of just 0.25 Cd — an impressive figure for a vehicle of this size.

Depending on the specification, the front end can also be fitted with an illuminated grille frame, a seamless light strip connecting the headlights, and star-shaped daytime running lights paired with the marque’s Digital Light technology. Buyers can also choose between the classic standing bonnet star or the more modern integrated central star within the grille.

At the rear, the Mercedes-Benz VLE sports very distinctive arc-shaped taillights that are integrated into the aerodynamic spoiler lip, while a full-width light strip frames the rear in an inverted U-shape, neatly integrating all lighting functions. The sliding doors themselves can also be equipped with motorised operation and safety sensors to prevent injuries, ensuring passengers can enter and exit safely.

Adding another layer of practicality is the separately opening rear window, allowing quick access to the cargo area without needing to open the entire tailgate — a feature most would certainly appreciate, much like on the Nissan Serena.

Step inside and the VLE begins to show what truly sets it apart. The cabin can be configured as either a five- or eight-seater, offering remarkable flexibility depending on the buyer’s needs.

Mercedes has also developed three different rear seat types for the VLE. The entry-level Comfort Seat features manual adjustment, while the Premium Comfort Seat adds full electric adjustment. At the top of the range sits the Grand Comfort Seat, which adds a headrest pillow, wireless charging, lumbar support with a massage function, and electrically adjustable calf support.

The entry-level Comfort Seat configuration introduces Roll & Go seats, which feature four integrated wheels, allowing them to be easily moved forward or backwards, locked into position, or even removed entirely and rolled away into the garage when more cargo space is needed.

For models equipped with electrically adjustable seats, Mercedes has also integrated four intelligent seating modes within the vehicle’s system. These include Standard, Executive, People & Baggage, and Baggage modes, with each configuration automatically adjusting the seats into the ideal layout depending on how the vehicle is being used.

Mounted behind the front seats is a massive 31.3-inch 8K display, complete with split-screen functionality and an eight-megapixel camera. This allows passengers to enjoy films, stream music videos, play games, or even join video conferences on the go.

Looking up, passengers will notice a large panoramic glass roof, dramatically highlighted by ambient lighting surrounds. Of course, it can be covered with an electric sunshade if it gets too bright — something Malaysians will surely appreciate.

Up front, the driver is greeted by a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, complemented by a massive 23.1-inch head-up display projected onto the windscreen. At the centre of the dashboard sits a 14-inch infotainment display, while the front passenger receives their own 14-inch screen for streaming videos or gaming during long journeys.

Powering all of this is the AI-powered Mercedes-Benz Operating System (MB.OS). The system is supported by the MBUX Virtual Assistant, which uses multi-agent generative AI to understand complex commands and hold natural conversations with occupants.

Optional extras for the interior include two wireless charging pads, multiple storage compartments, and a lower open storage shelf designed to hold larger items. In the Exclusive variant, Mercedes even adds a heated and cooled storage compartment beneath the centre armrest. For those who appreciate high-end audio, the VLE can also be specified with a 22-speaker Burmester surround sound system.

When it comes to luggage capacity, the VLE offers 795 litres of boot space, which can expand to a massive 4,078 litres when the removable seats are taken out.

The first variant to launch will be the VLE 300, which features a single rear-mounted electric motor producing 276 hp (203 kW). This version offers a claimed WLTP range of up to 700 km, making it one of the longest-range electric MPVs on the market.

Above it sits the VLE 400 4Matic, which adds a second electric motor to the front axle, bringing total output to over 300 kW (408 hp). Despite its size, the VLE 400 can sprint from 0-100 km/h in just 6.5 seconds.

The Mercedes-Benz VLE is also the first model built on Mercedes-Benz’s newly developed 800-volt modular Van Architecture, enabling faster charging and improved efficiency. Power comes from a 115 kWh battery pack supporting 300 kW DC fast charging, allowing the VLE to add 355 km of WLTP range in just 15 minutes under ideal conditions. Oh, and if you need to, it can also tow up to 2,500 kg.

To ensure a smooth and refined ride, the VLE is equipped with AIRMATIC air suspension, offering 40 mm of level control. At higher speeds, the vehicle automatically lowers itself to improve aerodynamics and efficiency. When stationary, it raises slightly to make it easier for passengers to get in and out. Despite its size, the VLE is also surprisingly manoeuvrable thanks to seven-degree rear-axle steering, which reduces the turning radius to just 10.9 metres.

In terms of driver assistance, the VLE comes standard with Distance Assist DISTRONIC. The vehicle is supported by a comprehensive sensor suite consisting of 10 cameras, five radar sensors, and 12 ultrasonic sensors. Buyers can further enhance the system with MB.DRIVE ASSIST, which adds semi-autonomous highway steering and Lane Change Assist.

As expected from Mercedes-Benz, the VLE also offers extensive personalisation options. Buyers can choose from four equipment lines: Standard, AMG Line, AMG Line Plus, and Exclusive, alongside four optional equipment packages: Advanced, Advanced Plus, Premium, and Premium Plus.

Additional options include the Night Package, a wide range of 19- to 22-inch alloy wheels, and numerous trim elements that allow owners to tailor the MPV to their personal taste.
