Ever told yourself as a kid, “I’ll get that car when I grow up” or “Maybe when I’m in my 30s”? Back then, waiting 20 or 30 years to buy your dream car felt like a lifetime — but for 92-year-old Derek Evans and his 94-year-old wife, Audrey, the wait was far longer. In celebration of their platinum (70th) wedding anniversary, the couple finally fulfilled that ‘dream car’ promise by purchasing a brand-new Porsche Macan.
“I suppose I’ve always had an adventurous streak,” said Derek. Grinning back in agreement, Audrey commented, “Neither of us are boy racers… But we do enjoy the feeling of power and comfort,” which explains their decision on a Porsche Macan.
Derek said he had always thought Porsche was unique — “so reliable and unlike anything else” — adding that he had long fancied owning one before finally asking himself, “Why not now?” He also noted, “There’s a great atmosphere when you own a Porsche. It feels like you’re part of an amazing club.”
In 1950s England, Derek learned to drive in his father’s Ford 8, before he and Audrey purchased an Austin 7, which produced just around 10 hp, as their first car as newlyweds. Seven decades and countless company cars later, taking delivery of their Porsche Macan from the Porsche Centre Bournemouth dealership made the occasion feel all the more special.

The Porsche Macan the couple chose is the standard variant of the internal combustion engine (ICE) model. Power comes from a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine producing 265 hp and 400 Nm of torque — a similar output figure to the Volkswagen Golf R.
Drive is sent to all four wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch PDK transmission, enabling a 0-100 km/h sprint in just 6.2 seconds and a top speed of 232 km/h — impressive performance figures, especially for a couple in their 90s.

Here in Malaysia, the Porsche Macan is currently sold exclusively as an electric vehicle (EV). The base model features a single rear-mounted electric motor producing up to 360 hp and 563 Nm of torque, while higher variants add a front-mounted motor for all-wheel drive, bringing total system output to as much as 639 hp and 1,130 Nm in the range-topping Turbo.
Launched locally in 2024, the Macan is priced from RM430,000 for the base variant up to RM635,000 for the Turbo, with both figures being on-the-road and without insurance.
While Mr and Mrs Evans have already clocked several thousand kilometres and have a number of long-distance trips planned, they are still thinking about what might come next. When asked, Derek confidently pointed to the Porsche Taycan as the ideal choice. “It’s a wonderful car,” he said. “It took me a little while to get out of it — but wow, what a thing!”
