Proton’s second fully-electric (EV) model, the all-new Proton eMAS 5 (stylised as e.MAS 5), has just been launched in Malaysia as what is the nation’s most affordable EV to date. Offered in two variants, Prime and Premium, the compact EV hatchback is priced at RM59,800 and RM72,800, on-the-road, without insurance, respectively.

To celebrate the launch, Proton is also offering an exclusive rebate of RM3,000 until December 31st, 2025, reducing their sticker prices to RM56,800 and RM69,800 for the two variants.

Powering the Proton eMAS 5 is a rear-mounted electric motor that is available in two outputs. The base Prime variant gets 79 hp (58 kW) and 130 Nm. This is paired to a 30.12 kWh lithium-iron phosphate (LFP) battery pack sourced from CATL, enabling a range of 225 km (WLTP).

The top-range Premium variant sees outputs increased to 116 hp (85 kW) and 150 Nm. It is also equipped with a larger 40.16 kWh LFP battery, which increases the range to up to 325 km (WLTP).

Both variants of the Proton eMAS 5 support 6.6 kW AC charging, taking 4.3 hours and 5.9 hours to go from 10-80% on the Prime and Premium variants, respectively. The Prime variant supports DC charging at 53 kW, while the Premium variant supports 71 kW DC. Both variants can be recharged from 30-80% in 21 minutes.

Despite its cutesy exterior design, the eMAS 5 is 4,135 mm long, 1,805 mm wide, 1,580 mm tall and has a wheelbase of 2,650 mm, which puts it larger than the Proton Iriz. It shares a similar exterior design with the Geely Xingyuan, but Proton reassures that the eMAS 5 is not a mere rebadge of the former, highlighting that it has invested over 752,000 man-hours in localisation efforts, including an upgraded chassis that is stronger than its donor car.

The interior of the eMAS 5 features a 14.6-inch centre-mounted touchscreen infotainment display with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a driver’s 8.8-inch digital gauge cluster, and 32 individual storage compartments throughout the interior, including a 20-litre space under the rear bench, a 70-litre frunk, and a boot space of 375 litres, expandable to 1,320 litres.

For safety, both Prime and Premium variants are equipped with ADAS features as standard, including blind spot monitors, lane change assist, rear cross traffic alert, rear collision warning, and door opening warning. The Premium variant adds a full suite of features, such as adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, traffic sign recognition, and a 360-degree surround view camera with 3D display.
