Tesla’s long-rumoured affordable model is finally becoming a reality — and this time, it’s not just another bold claim from Elon Musk. Rumoured to be called the Tesla Model Y “Standard”, spy shots of the stripped-down SUV have surfaced online, with key details revealed ahead of its debut.
Images shared by Ryan Mable on X show a Model Y-like prototype near Tesla’s Gigafactory in Texas, offering a glimpse of what’s to come. Meanwhile, information from a website source code uncovered by The Tesla Newswire on X revealed how much simpler this new Tesla Model Y Standard could be.
Despite sharing a similar silhouette to the Tesla Model Y, the front end of the supposed budget-friendly model no longer features a full-width light bar or split headlight design. Instead, it adopts separate headlight assemblies, housing all lighting functions within a single element. The car is also expected to ditch the matrix headlights in favour of more conventional automatic high-beam functions.
Lower down, the bumper design appears simpler and more in line with the Tesla Model 3. While the spy shots show the car riding on 19-inch “Crossflow” wheels shared with other Tesla Model Y variants, leaked website images suggest a new set of 18-inch “Aperture” wheels will also be offered.
Moving to the rear, the taillight design has been simplified compared to the current Model Y, no longer featuring the diffused red light bar with integrated Tesla lettering. Instead, it adopts a cleaner, more straightforward full-width taillight design, which now form an ‘L’ shape that extends inward, replacing the C-shaped layout of the existing Model Y.
While there are no interior shots yet, The Tesla Newswire fan page reports that the Model Y Standard will retain the 15.4-inch central touchscreen but feature a more basic cabin with dual-tone textile and vegan leather upholstery, a manual steering wheel adjustment, and a “closed glass roof”. Rear passengers will also get manual air vent controls instead of the touchscreen setup found in other Tesla models.
Other “downgrades” include manually adjusted side mirrors, manually-folding second-row seats, a seven-speaker sound system, and a conventional particulate filter instead of a HEPA filter.

In addition to these recent sightings and specification leaks, Tesla themselves has also added fuel to the speculation with two new posts on X. The first shows a spinning wheel with the Tesla logo at its centre and no visible lug nuts — possibly teasing a new set of aerodynamic wheels. The video ends with the date “10/7”, hinting at an announcement in the coming days.
Eighteen hours later, Tesla posted another teaser showing a pair of headlights illuminating in the dark. The design closely matches the Model Y Standard spy shots, which lacks the full-width light bar as seen on the Model Y and Cybertruck.
According to The Tesla Newswire, the upcoming Model Y Standard could be priced from USD39,990 (approx. RM168k) — about USD5,000 less than the current Model Y in the US, which starts at USD44,990 (approx. RM190k). Based on the date hinted by Tesla, it appears we won’t have to wait too much longer to find out in detail – stay tuned for the latest updates on what could become Tesla’s most significant model in years.
