Turn signal stalks return to the Tesla Model 3 in China — but existing owners will have to pay to get them back

Tesla has eaten its words and admitted that ditching the turn signal stalk in the Tesla Model 3 back in 2022 was a bad decision. According to a report from CarNewsChina, all variants of the Model 3 in China will now be coming with a turn signal stalk once again.

However, if you have already bought the Tesla Model 3 in the past few years, you might not be out of luck just yet. According to the report, owners in China can choose to pay Tesla an additional RMB2,499 (approx. RM1.5k) to have the turn signal stalk retrofitted. This option will be available from mid-September and will be available first to Model 3 units produced after 7 February 2025, with earlier models to follow suit.

The move might not be too much of a surprise, since the updated Model Y that launched earlier this year has already included a turn indicator stalk, despite the Model 3 not having one. Like the Model Y, though, it’ll likely just be a turn indicator stalk, so wiper control and gear selection must still be done through the steering wheel buttons and screens.

In related news, Tesla has also recently added a new variant of the Tesla Model 3 with an even bigger battery in China. Dubbed the Tesla Model 3+, it boasts a CLTC-rate range of 830 km via a 78.4 kWh nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) battery. The car is priced at RMB269,500 (approx. RM158k) and sits between the rear-wheel drive (RWD) and Long Range all-wheel-drive (AWD) variants.

Here in Malaysia, the Tesla Model 3 is currently available in three variants. The range kicks off with a base RWD variant capable of 520 km of range (WLTP) from its 62.5 kWh battery pack, a Long Range AWD variant capable of 629 km of range (WLTP), and a Performance AWD variant boasting 528 km (WLTP) from a 79 kWh battery pack.

Pricing for the Model 3 starts at RM181,000 for the base RWD, RM210,000 for the Long Range AWD, and RM242,000 for the Performance AWD — all on-the-road, without insurance.
