Tesla Superchargers in Malaysia now with Congestion Fee – RM2/min to charge beyond 80%

Tesla Malaysia is activating a new “Congestion Fee” at selected Supercharger stations in the country, in a bid to enhance the availability of its charging infrastructure in the country.

The new Congestion Fee will replace the “Idle Fee” at the Tesla Superchargers from before. A fixed-fee of RM2 per minute will be charged to customers at “busy” Supercharger locations, on top of their energy usage fees, if they continue to charge their vehicles beyond 80% state of charge (SoC). Users will be given a 5-minute grace period to disconnect their vehicles before the congestion fee applies.

Users can check if Congestion Fee applies at a specific Supercharging Station by searching and navigating to the location through the touschreen in their vehicle. Additionally, users will also be notified via the Tesla app when approaching the Congestion Fee grace period.

Charging fees at Tesla Superchargers range from RM1.19RM1.29 per kWh. Based on the Tesla Malaysia website, there are currently 15 Supercharging Stations nationwide, offering a combined 68 Superchargers for use. The latest addition to the list is at i-City Finance Avenue, Shah Alam, which is priced at RM1.19/kWh.

Previously, users are only charged a fixed idle fee of RM4 per minute if their vehicle continues to occupy the Supercharger after charging is completed, and only when the Supercharger station is at 50% capacity or more.

The new congestion fee will most definitely help alleviate bottlenecks at the charging stations, as electric vehicle (EV) charging significantly slows down past 80% SoC, sometimes even taking longer to charge from 80-100% than it does to go from 10-80%.

EV owners are commonly recommended to set their charging limits to 80%, as not only does it cost less to charge at many public charging stations – especially those that charge fees based on usage time – it could also help protect the battery’s health.
